Question about adding shocks to hood

In the last 12 years or so, I've owned mostly German cars with the exception of 2002 VW Eurovan, all came with hood shocks that allows the hood to be opened and stay opened without using the prop like on the Mazda 5. Is there an aftermarket that may perform like that of the factory one that I can put on the Mazda5?

Also, I've noticed that my Mazda5 does not lock the doors when the vehicle starts moving unlike my Odyssey. Is this something I can set so that the doors will automatically lock

Mazda 5 doesn't have auto door lock feature in states, but you can do it aftermarket.

I hate hood shocks. My lexus have them, and once they go bad, they are pricey, but you can add them aftermarket on the 5 as well. Good luck.

Okay, thanks. Not sure why the Mazda don't have the autolock feature. This is a good feature to have when you have kids in the van - which I have 3. I got so used to Odyssey that I was expecting that the M5 had it also. I'm just afraid that my kids don't accidentally open the doors while moving. Also, it's a pain to have safety lock activated then you always have to get out of the van and open the door for them since it's not powered. I wished Mazda would add those in the next M5 - powered door option and automatically locking doors. Plus a central lighting from driver's seat would be a plus too.

Other countries get the power doors...we don't in the states.

I have complained about central lighting from front many a times in my reviews. I used to be the only one around here that was bothered by it.

Does anyone know if the UK gen 2 Mazda 5 has the auto door lock thing? Or know if it can be enabled?

I might add the hood shock after all. This is a high quality system and I always had it on all my German cars. So it will go in, I will most likely go with the one with 4 year warranty.

I was gonna say, you can always head to Home Depot and "borrow" the struts for a storm door and make it work..... GET 'ER DONE!! But that kit made for the 3 might do the trick. Yes, German cars (and I had an '88 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme that had hood struts believe it or not) usually have hood struts as well as other luxury brands. It makes sense doesn't it?? Not really, if most luxury car owners probably don't even do their own mechanical work and maintenance on their cars to not get dirty, why the hell as an engineer would you care if the hood has struts? It's more of a convenience to the shop mechanic, not the owner.

I do most of the regular maintenance on the car myself. Installed it already, and loving it! A bit pricey but showed it to few people and they thought it came from the factory like that.

Which set did you install, the set for the Mazda3? If so, I was curious if there were any workarounds to get it into a 5 hood. BTW that comment was meant specifically regarding luxury vehicles that typically don't see their owners getting down and dirty with 'em, obviously it's a benefit to have for anyone that works on their own babies at home.

I was a VW fanatic for many years and starting from A4 chassis, all Jetta, Passat, Beetle, and Eurovan (T3) vehicles had the hood shocks. It was rather annoying that most Japanese cars still use props.

Maybe has more to do with that the Japanese can fit under the hood, and the Germans can't. (2cents)
