Putting acetone in your gas!?

So I came across this video about how putting acetone in you gas totaly boosts your gas mileage. So should we all do this to our cars?

I just googled that and looks like you can get some good mpg gains doing it. Just don't get it on any paint because it eats paint. Also need to make sure that the fuel system doesn't use any "cheap" plastics since it eats those as well and that would cause some bad problems.

Euro Tuner or europeancar, can't remember which, did a test a while back on octane boosters. They showed that they worked, but didn't offer tons of gains. Least thats what I remembered from it.

I am interested in the how and the why. You know how exactly does putting some acetone in there up the mileage. And does it hurt anything?

It supposedly helps the gas vaporize easier so it burns more completely, thus giving more power. That s***'s not good for rubbers.

Acetone does nothing to your mileage or power.
Its a waste of time and money.

Exactly like toluene and all those other "tricks", it slows the burn of the flame kernel in the combustion chamber, so it effectively behaves similar to higher octane fuels, but it eats so many plastics and rubbers that it leaves a huge trail of destruction in its path. NOT RECOMMENDED.

Except it doesn't - at least not as effectively as xylene or toluene.

Xylene has a native AKI of 118. Its hard to beat that as far as "tricks" go.
Two gallons added to 12 gallons of 91 in a 14 gallon tank makes 95 octane gasoline.
Three gallons added makes 98.

Well, 107 racing gas is about $7 a gallon here.
Xylene can be had for $10 a gallon.
Normal 91 pump gas is about $3 a gallon.

If you were looking for a tank of 95 (which will be plenty of safety margin for the typical "ragged-edge" FI tune on "street" gas), a 14 gallon tank would work out thus:

Xylene:
(12 x $3) + (2 x $10) = $56
Race Gas:
(10 x $3) + (4 x $7) = $58

That said, the vast majority of people that seek out higher-octane fuel don't really need it.
If you are trying to push 1 BAR though a 10:1 motor, it might be worth considering!(thumb)

Keep in mind if you use Xylene or Touline, be sire to put 4oz of marveal mystery oil in with it or that stuff with dry out every o ring in your fuel system! Dont ask me how i know this As far as Acetone goes... i wouldnt bother.

Theres two octane boosters i know which work. Torco, which is concentrated race fuel and will make your spark plugs look red and Liquid Horsepower, which has a certain amount of lead in it. Dont use it if youre running any cats.

Nah, it won't.

There is already Xylene in gasoline. Its part of the normal formulation (along with another 30 or more nasty, dangerous, aggressive compounds).
Just don't exceed 25% concentrations and you'll be alright.

Ok.. you goto the drag strip.. Youre at the minimum fuel capacity, say 5 gallons.. you add 1 -2 gallons of that s***, youre drying out your o-rings.. again, im speaking from experience... i never met a person at the strip who serious about racing running a full tank of gas...(RTM)

It might possibly "dry out" the "O" rings only if you expose them to air after soaking them in a high concentration of xylene.
Even then, modern sealing rings are synthetic, so aromatics won't do much to them.
