push button start

Idiot is probably not the term I'd use, preoccupied, maybe. Walk to the car in my long coat on because it's 5 degrees f outside. Unlock the door with my fob, and put the keys in my coat pocket because it's more convenient than putting in my pants. After driving for a while I take my coat off because being in a warm car for multiple hours with a long coat is not comfortable. Get to my parking garage and the walk to the elevator doesn't require a coat, leave it in the car step out, lock the door with the button on the door like I do with the other 4 cars in the family and close the door. Keys locked in.

Yes I could use the fob to lock the door, but 2 of my cars don't have a fob. So I could develop a habit that works in 3 of my 4 cars, or a habit that works in 2 of my 4 cars. The fact of the matter is mazda chose the option package poorly. They are correcting it in 2015. I think they've admitted the mistake by their actions. It reminds me of the ford tempo that put the horn button on a stalk next to the turn signal. When you came from any other car you expected the horn to be on the steering wheel, when you went from the tempo to another car you'd turn on the windshield wiper trying to beep the horn. This half baked option a nuisance not feature.

Seriously... Either take the key fob out, unlock door, put it back in your pocket/purse and push the start button on your car.
Or if you're like me, stick your hand in your pocket and push unlock and get in car, start car.
Once you get out of your car, do the same to lock the car.

There is ZERO reason to leave the key fob in the car.

Amen

Idiot is probably not the term I'd use

Sorry, but I am going to keep using that term with prejudice. Either: 1) don't lock the car with the damn button on the door, or 2) if you are able to remember to grab your keys in your other cars then make sure you grab them in the CX-5.

To nxt and beefy. The point of this thread is to complain about locking the keys in the car. Read the title before you ended the chat And yes it's possible to lock them in the car. I have 3 cars. Not all use fobs. So by habit it can happen. Throw the fob in the cup holder and forget to take it out. My other cars don't have remote so I just lock them with the lock button inside.

The push button start is primarily due to the fully electronic nature of today's vehicles.

At work (aircraft) this type of system is called FADEC - full authority digital engine control.
It's cheaper, more reliable and the way of the future..... till the EMP, then I'll have to remember how to set points again!

I got the car 4 days ago.

I've not used the key. It's always on my pocket.

Seriously, I can't remember if I've pressed the lock/unlock buttons in the key...

Look smart ass. I'm just saying. Either way you need a fob So either it's a key or a fob you still need one or the other. I'm not blaming mazda at all. I've had a mazdas for over 20 years. This technology is actually not really anything to rant and rave about.

Easy fellas, no reason to start calling people names.

If you don't have the "advanced keyless entry system" option, I can see where the fob and start button could be annoying. You would have to get in the habit of unlocking the door with the fob and then putting it right back in your pocket. It seems unnatural when you're accustomed to putting the key in the ignition and then removing it before you exit the car.

With the keyless entry option you just press a button on the door to unlock, sit down, and press the start button. You never touch the key fob and don't have to take it out of your pocket. I rarely touch the fob aside from putting it in my pants pocket each morning.

This was a secondary reason why I got the Technology package. Otherwise the push button start didn't make sense to me.

GT keyless works well, can't lock keys in car even if you try. No complaints.

I personally love the push button start and it was one of the reasons I bought the car.

I have a 2014 GT w/Tech and you can lock the keys in the car, but you have to make a conscious decision to do so AND the car tells you you're doing it.

I've tried this:
-One set of keys, outside the car, close the door and walk away. Car locks. (this is the regular, expected function)
-One set of keys, keys left inside the car, close the door and walk away. Car remains unlocked.
-One set of keys, keys left inside the car, press the keyless entry button on the door. Car remains unlocked.

-Two sets of keys, both outside the car, close the door and walk away. Car locks. (this is the regular, expected function)
-Two sets of keys, both inside the car, close the door and walk away. Car remains unlocked.
-Two sets of keys, one inside, one outside the car, close the door and walk away. Car remains unlocked.
-Two sets of keys, one inside, one outside the car, press the keyless entry button on the door. Car Locks. <======= I believe this is where you're having problems?

That being said, you should be able to unlock it since you have the other set of keys.

I have a smart key on my current car, and I LOVE it. When I am trying to open the car while holding a squirming 2 year old, being able to unlock the car simply by touching the door handle is FABULOUS. I will happily pay more to have a smart key.

Thank you crystal white. I wasn't trying to start a fight. I was just annoyed by smart ass remarks by certain people. I'm sure I will get used to the fob at some point. At the end I the day it's my wife's car anyhow. I drive a Honda. Lol. But I will say the cx5 is the best small SUV out there

This is want I noticed today; I left a fob in the car, I got out with the other one in my pocket and locked the doors with the driver door lock button. When I closed the door, the car beeped twice and unlocked the doors on its own. I had to use my fob to lock them again. Not sure if it did that because I had a fob in the car or because I had a second one outside the car; the former would be neat as I used to lock my keys with my old car all the time (had a concealed spare key for that reason).
