puff of smoke?

just wanted to see what you guys thought. sometimes when i start up my ms3 i get a puff of white smoke out the tailpipe. it doesnt look like it has a blue tint or anything. i have 5000 miles on it. i broke in the engine when i first got it and i leave the turbo cool down before i shut it off too. i take really good care of it and just wanted to see what you guys thought. i saw another thread about white smoke but that problem was happening at idle, mine is just a puff at start up. could it be condensation sitting in the exhaust from letting the turbo cool down? or do you think turbo seals?

it could be a condensation.. or a leaky valve seals.. White smoke is usually either coolant in the engine, or oil in the exhaust from a turbine seals.. Assuming it is from the turbo, the reason why it is white and not blue is that the oil escapes directly into the exhaust, where most of it vaporizes, not burns as it would if the oil went into the intake and burned in the mazda engine. try to observe on other things that might happened and give us an update.. good luck

Does your tailpipe look a little too dirty? WHat about when you floor it, same puff of smoke? I had a car with the same problem, turned out to be the turbo as mentioned earlier. It progessively got worse over time. It's under warranty, have it looked at by the pros.

could be anything...take it to the dealer before it gets worse and harder to fix

I had the same thing but it got progressively worse. After idling it would pour white smoke. There was no coolant in the engine oil (thank goodness) and the car ran great so I knew something odd was going on. I took it to the dealer and they said it was condensation build up from my race pipe. I put the 2nd Cat back on and it hasn't returned since. I had a thread on this recently. Here is a quick pic I took before I put the stock Cat back on, hope this helps...

QUESTION........... Is this your first Turbo car?

I have never seen a group of people so paranoid about a little smoke coming from the tail pipe. If it breaks, take it to the dealer plain and simple...... I'm sure the CAT hides alot of whats going on, do you think some mazda engineer doesn't know about this? If they were more concerned about it, they would do something to fix it.

Not to rant on, but this is like the 10,000,000 thread about a little smoke from the tail pipe. Of those threads NO ONE HAS HAD A FAILURE OR HAD ANYTHING ELSE FOUND WRONG WITH THERE CAR. No matter the color, white or black nothing is wrong with your ride. Mazda made the motor run alittle richer to compensate for all climates. so just clean the tail pipe alittle more often.

And yes condensation does seem to happen more in turbo cars than N/A motors. Why.... i dunno for sure but it could be because the turbo causes a s*** load of heat right away. my SVO shows 950-1000* within 10 seconds of startup before the turbo on the manifold. I have 2 turbo cars and both equally smoke alot till they are fully warmed up. Hell my SVO smokes forever due to the fact iron motors take forever to get WARMED UP.

Na/a motors don't come close to that temp, unless at WOT.

It's a legit question if he's getting excessive smoke, like I said, I had smoke and it turned out to be the turbo seals. Bottom line is have the dealer check, thats what the warranty is for!

As for the SVO smoke, it's a Ford - what do you expect!
