Protege5 Shaking Badly At Highway Speeds:

Hey guys, so just a quick background story:

My son drives the P5 to school, and living in upstate NY, we are constantly pounded by snow. My sons friends go drifting, so my son took the P5 drifting. He hit a snowbank, and realized the P5 was shaking while driving (30 mph). He told me the honest truth, so I was not that upset, but to fix the P5 at that time we got the tire pressure filled. The two tire pressures of the side he hit the snowbank with were 21 and 26 and the P5 is 32 correct? That solved the problem for about 2-3 weeks, until we just got by this noreaster. He did not go drifting this time, however the P5 is shaking again. He took it on the highway and told me it shook. I brushed it off because the P5 not being a stable car in my opinion has always shaken, but I took it on the highway and damn it shakes badly and you can instantly tell something is not right.

Filled tires up, and still shakes at the 55+ speeds.

My friends say its the alignment?

I am not gonna lie to you, idk jack about cars!

Any help?

After two years, I am not at all satisfied with this car to be honest with you guys, and will probably be buying my son an Accord in the near future. Any ideas on what I can get for a 02 P5 with 35k miles?

I read online, and since my problem has occurred after snow storms, many people say snow gets stuck in the wheels?

yeah it happens a lot, if not tires need to be balanced, alignment doesnt typically cause shaking, just pulling to one side

That or stick something in the wheels to get the packed snow/ice out of there. I was having some fun yesterday in the snow and thought I cleared it all out but on my drive home she shook like a sumbitch on the highway. Once home I cleaned them out better and had no issues today.

Sorry to hear you are not happy with the P5 and you should be able to get a nice chunk with only 35k on your 02...my 02 has over 146k....lol

Check the rims for dents/cracks. I hit one of my steel wheels into a curb last winter (not even very hard) and it got dented. After that it would leak air and shake at highway speeds. After replacing the rim it drove fine.

You should also check the tie rod end on the side that got hit, it may be damaged as well (depending on the force of the impact) :(

Yeah I would say snow being jammed up there or a little bit of damage. We just got absolutely crapped on in Edmonton so pretty much every time I take the car out I have to clean the snow off the wheels.

This may sound obvious but check to make sure the lug nuts are tight and all there. Sometimes hard impacts and knock them loose sounds weird but it happend to a friend of mine. Wish I could wreck my parents car doin stuff a fwd isn't meant to do... but owell atleast he was honest.

All good advice.
Best would be to sell the car to me and get him a honda.

I will give you $3K for it right now. Hit me up.

Nah, if Mazda didn't make the p5 version - i would never have considered getting a Mazda.

Really.
