protege5 mpg ??

The BEST mileage i've seen from either car is 29 and that was only once with a fully loaded car through the mountains of West Virginia driving Callie's auto with sport shift with 89 octane gas

Normally, 22-24 in teh city is all we see

Your right foot is one of the biggest determining factors to your mpg's. As is your speed. Keep it around 70 for the best highway mileage

If you pretend the highway is a NASCAR track and drive with the nose of your P5 glued to the rear bumper of an SUV or van you can probably go even higher, since most of the power at highway speeds is used to overcome air drag. The only problems are:

1. if the lead car slams on his brakes you will die
2. the first cop that sees this will throw you in jail

Seriously, drafting semi's is not a good plan for your, or your car's, long term survival.

I only draft semi's. If I can't slow down faster than a semi truck chances are my brakes were about to fail and I would of ended up in a blazing inferno smashed up against the median somewhere...

True story

My dad drives a semi and has since he was 20, so, he's been tailgated PLENTY

He can't stand it

SO, guy in an Audi came flying up behind him and disappeared, so, he knew he was on his butt.

Going along I95, just so happened to be a blue plastic kiddie pool on the side of the road

He swerved over towards the pool, audi follows, and, since he can't see around the truck, hits the pool that gets sucked in RIGHT infront of the Audi

Blue chips and bits explode in my dad's rearview mirror

Audi pulls out and speeds away flipping the bird

Moral of the story, you don't know whose driving the semi

w00t! 24.5 mpg today! I drive about a 70/30 split of highway/city but I'm been driving more aggressively lately. On another note I actually found a station with 94 octane today!

all my stations carry 94, not a single one carried 91 which is all the MP3 ECU needed

i just bought a 03 protege5 auto
and i only get 24mpg hyway, is this normal?
i though i should get aroud 30
Define "highway" driving? To me, highway driving is 55-65 mph speed limit. Interstate driving is 65-75 mph speed limit.

I've got 32 mpgs by driving "highway" speeds and as low as 22 mpgs by draining an entire tank above interstate speeds (about 85 mph for the entire life of the tank).

Newby here - first post.

I'm a member at Miata.net but the wife has a 2003 P5 so I just joined here today.

I've gotten up to 34mpg on the highway. I think it averages about 30 around town.

2.0l with 5-speed manual transmission.

We bought it new in November 2002. I've only used synthetic 5W-30 since new (Mobil 1 or Castrol synthetic - whichever is cheaper). I switched from Mazda OEM to Purolater filters a couple of years ago.

This car is actually a little faster to 60 than the '94 Miata.

i did a tune up on my 03 protege5 and my mpg went from 23 to 25
my engine light is not on and the car runs as smooth as a babys ass
so i gess im going to have to settle for 25 mpg

2003, fresh plugs , always fresh oil, air filter, etc. not using cruise I get 26.5-27 at 70mph, 25.5 using cruise at 70 mph. I called BS on a buddy I work with on his manual trans P5 claiming 32 at 70. Boy was he crushed when I showed him how to do the math... He was getting 26 mpg..
