Not normal. Well, not normal unless you were driving 90mph the whole time, or driving into a headwind.

Since it is a new (to you) car the problem could be a lot of different things. In no particular order:

1. Check for CEL codes
2. Check plugs (might as well just replace them)
3. Check air filter (ditto)
4. Check oil (if not brand new looking change it and the filter)
5. Check transmission fluid.
6. Check for dragging brakes
7. Check compression.

Is it running rough? If so

8. Consider replacing the two spark plug wires
9. Consider replacing the two coils.
[Do not buy either of these at a dealer, shop around for a (much) better price.]

Is it running really, really rough? If so

10. Search this forum for "EGR" and read up on that issue.

I get poorer than avg fuel economy in the winter (I think due to the winter blend of gas), though 24mpg does sound low for the highway. That's normally what I get around town in the winter. A little maintenance would likely increase that number.

Edit: I missed that you have an auto...that makes your mpg numbers much more normal.

yea you should be around 28 or so on the highway if you are doing a reasonable speed, as stated before check somethings and even take it in for a tune up!

YES ITS REGULAR!!!! in my opinion at least

i get 24-25 highway : / ("hypermiling" i might touch 28-30)

driving 65 rarely 70

I get 24mpg city with turbo, although I have a manual.
My auto use to get 22 city 25 highway.

For those of you that like numbers...

I think it depends on a lot of factors but here's one example of my trip in November 2008 from Columbus, OH to Tampa, FL to Orlando, FL and then back to Columbus, OH.

Notes: I cruise at 5 - 8 miles above posted limit on the highway (70 - 78 mph). There's also city driving within Tampa and Orlando.

Obviously, this is not an exact science. I filled the tank until the nozzle stopped...then topped off to nearest whole dollar. But it's a good estimate.

I have a manual but I noticed after putting on a OBX header and intake I got a little extra power but my mpg's with normal daily driving went from upper 20's to over 30mpg. I usually get about 31mgp but can get up to 33 on long roadtrips where I draft semi's a lot. I don't know much about auto's but if you help it breath a little better you should get better mpg too.

Good point, forgot to mention mods that may affect MPG. I have an OBX header and Injen CAI. My P5 is an automatic with 142k+ miles.

i avg. 29-33 all city.
maybe a couple miles on highway service road but its the same limit as other streets i drive on which are usually 40-50mph limit.

I just got my best mileage ever. 36mpg! Went the speed limit down I-5 in CA. I am still in disbelief!

turbo's auto, 130k miles...last tank combined driving 26 mpg...best ever (with turbo) 29

I always got aroudn 23-25 mpg in town... you could have a faulty 02 sensor first but I would start by doing a full tune up on it beings that its new to you. That was with a reg auto p5 with around 170k on it btw.

edit: Theirs only one time that I got really crappy gas mileage and that was when I was doing 80-100 to orlando from jaxs the entire time(21.1mpg hwy). That was later fixed by a new 02 sensor as it every so often threw a CEL saying no signal.

but can get up to 33 on long roadtrips where I draft semi's a lot.

If you pretend the highway is a NASCAR track and drive with the nose of your P5 glued to the rear bumper of an SUV or van you can probably go even higher, since most of the power at highway speeds is used to overcome air drag. The only problems are:

1. if the lead car slams on his brakes you will die
2. the first cop that sees this will throw you in jail

Seriously, drafting semi's is not a good plan for your, or your car's, long term survival.

24-25 is all mine would ever get with or without AC, driving like you stole it, loaded/unloaded or like you're taking a driving test. I have 03 sport auto as well, auto vs. manual mode makes no difference either.
