Protege5: Harder, not Smarter!

Your previous post says "see below" a few times. What I see is a red x, and no pics. I am interested in learning some of this aero biz and pics will help this old man a lot.

Ah...let me fix that. Probly because its a picture from a registered forum and I'm "logged in"

Dimple the car like a golf ball...

Thats been a big topic on the ecomodder forums and we got a lot of insight from airplane designers, etc.

There are multiple reasons why that will not help on vehicles in regards to overall body panels.

Now...on flat underbodys, there is a massive gain to be had by dimpling flat underbodys to keep airflow laminar. Otherwise the flow will separate after the first 2-3 inches. I plan on doing just that when I build my underbody.

Simply dimpling a panel actually increases drag because your creating turbolent airflow. This turbulence makes the air "stick" to the panel. Which is good in some cases...and very bad in others.

I got "Caught" examining a Honda Insight in a parking lot the other day, I was down looking underneath the car at the way they mounted the wheel covers. The owner got a good laugh out of it. ;)

This HEAVILY modifed civic utilizes boat tails behind his tires..

Very roughly done obviously...But you can't argue with 90+ mpg on a cruise.

That fitment, <3 I gotta say, looks awesome. I kinda thought at first, oh great, its not gonna look like a P5 anymore but it really still does! Just a thought, I know its minimal savings but that guard on the top of the rear bumper by where the trunk closes, have you thought about removing that and then maybe putting a plastidip layer in its place to mimic how it looked? Again, im not sure whether that would work for but it was a thought :)

Haha I was thinking of just painting it black to match the hatch actually xD

Mythbusters did it in one episode. It did show gains in mileage.

Yes, and there testing was flawed in many area's. Not to mention they never posted their data...and they only did 1 directional runs...VERRRRRYYYY unscientific methods. Remember its a entertainment show...not a science lab.

On a side note...its make fun of me time!

I finally managed to forget to put the hoodpins in when I went driving. WOOOOOSHHHH *watches rear view mirror as hood flips 200 feet high and go WHAM into someones driveway. That why you use 4 pins instead of 2...or that sucker would have NAILED my roof frame/windshield. *shrug* I just pulled over stuck it back on and resumed my trip. I could hear the bang as it hit the pavement from several hundred feet away in my car...I saw it flex to what looked to me into a "u" After retrieving it, it only managed to scrape off very little bits of plastidip and punched a half inch hole in it. (eassssssily repairable)

*shrug* I'm replacing the hood with the new one anyways so I was gonna burn it.

Funny thing about it was when I had the hood off the day before I was thinking to myself, wow I better put those pins back in or ima forget....derrrrrp

The hatch looks so great man, kudos. Excited to see where this car continues to go and see a new hood on there!

Just so you know, that's a very old saying...scientists do know how bee's fly now, and robotic "insects" are fairly commonplace.

I'm trying to decide whether to build my own vacuum pump out of a refrigerator or buy one....I want to try vacuum bagging.

Anyways....heres a cool video for those of you who haven't seen it!

Saw that vid, thought it was awesome. I bought the lego Mindstorm set when it first came out. Loved it and used it until I broke the axles on both motors

I have a challenge for you...

1.) Buy this hood scoop
wH5f3gUK_WwKJlGe22D_bdksl8SetBypj0RDcPsbvIDpFPfNtlCyqjJjAvpv_PCOxXGeyiC5uz06gbU7HCKIZv6aAH7ZZANmqzx1wnLYiX0iakJ8tZEiP1wgZQZ5PiXZo-0vmbXOWlEMqtfPboP4eODKiGNNblBaLfBoVQD6JwtdNp4=s220-c

2.) Install it on you hood

3.) Make a mold

4.) Make that shiz in CF

End up with something like this

Shouldn't be hard to do, but...I don't want a hood scoop! :D

And even if I did, I would just make my own from scratch :D

Are you considering a cf hood?

Not at 47$ a yard, lol

I would love to do 2 layers of carbon over the fiberglass base. (like aftermarket hoods)

I'm looking around for places to get "cheaper" carbon from, I just can't seem to find any place.

I only have one layer. You can see through my weave in some of the small gaps, and by see through, I mean it it lights up more when the sun shines through while the hood is open lol

Thats why I would use 2 if I did...1 is kind of halfass no offense xD
