Protege5 Autox Suspension

For the upcoming season I'm making some changes to my suspension set-up, I'll also be running 205-50-25 Yokohama A032R's (Here in Canada A032's are the same price as Azenis) Last year I ran a whiteline 20mm rear sway bar which greatly increased oversteer. I need new struts and am looking at a set of Tokico HP's. I have a set of Tein S-tech springs and my worry is that since Tein has higher rear spring rates than in the front that this could this make the car too tail happy. I spun a couple times last year getting used to the sway bar. Any thoughts on the Tein S-tech/Tokico HP combo? Also I've been following the thread about MSP spring rates and I too have a Greyhound :)

ok, well then i guess i can answer you. :)

last year i ran the MSP springs, MSP rear struts, and MSP 20mm rear bar (and azenis on mx-6 rims). i didn't get quite the rotation i wanted, so i obviously drive differently than you!

anyway- what dictates handling balance is not just roll rate, but the relative roll rates front/rear. since the teins are stiffer in the front as well, it should be ok. you might want to calculate the ratio of f/r spring rates to see if there's a difference. another option is to install an MSP front bar.

BTW- i'm probably going to upgrade to the teins (or GCs), AWR 21.5 bar, and 7" wheels this spring.

edit: i don't think the Tein S-techs have a higher rear rate than front. the only thing i saw set up that way was the AWR coilover set (275f/325r).

All great Protege AutoX's have greyhounds. It's just a fact. I also had to do really obscene things to get my car to spinout. What were you air pressures front and rear?

Get illuminas, that was you can adjust the struts to change the over/understeer. And adjustable sway bar would help too. I haven't spun my car yet, I did get waaaaaay out, but could always reel it back in. Man, I miss autocrossing.... :(

I meant higher spring rates in the front, my mistake. The fronts are 179lbs. The rears 145lbs. Last year on my street tires my pressures were 50psi front, 40psi rear. It could be the way I drive, I tend to drive in a bit too hot and then trail off the throttle, so when lifting it unloads the rear tires and I get oversteer, it usually works and my times are great, I just don't want any more oversteer. Also I thought that adjusting damping with the illuminas wouldn't really affect understeer/oversteer.

I resent that. :p
Neither Mike nor I have greyhounds and we are working towards greatness. (poke)

I ran 45/40 on average on my Azenis and managed to spinout once during my autox school. I also keep my swaybar at it's highest setting. Got an autox coming up the end of the month and I'm looking forward to it. :)

i'll see you there. :) you might want to consider adopting one of those sweet, lovely animals in order to push you over the top. best. dogs. ever.

btw- we've been fostering one, and she just went this morning to her new home. :(

anyway, i usually run 40-43f and 50r in my azenis. once i get some camber plates, i'll reduce the front pressures.

i got nothing in the way of oversteer until i adjusted the rear toe out. then i got some in a high-speed wet slalom. that's it. however, on the skidpad the car was extremely controllable w/ the throttle.

i ran the ratios for the MSP springs vs. the teins- both sets have the rear rate at 81% of the front, so i don't *think* it should change the handling balance, only reduce the body lean.

i co-drove a prelude last week in the rain, and MAN did i spin that thing. twice. the complete opposite of my car...lots of power, no grip at all.

They are the best dogs ever. We have a 67lb 5 year old red fawn female from West Virginia.

Thanks for the info on the springs. Unless I want to compete in a couple of winter events (on snow tires) I have to wait until May to AutoX. I am going through withdrawl.

snowcrossing is fun. we may get to do some of that yet.

ours is an 85lb 5-yo tuxedo male. the foster was a 2-yo, 59lb fawm female. the size disparity was amazing. and man, was she slow compared to him. (laugh)

In aberdeen? I drove by there around 4. I was picking up a MSP lip.

yup, that was us. next one is on jan 22. philly region has some of the best STS competitors around...including the Redshift civic, the all-time winningest STS car! it's a blast...you should come out.

now that my idle/CEL problem is cleared up, the Slowtege will be back in action.
