Protege Weight Reduction

i think coilovers are a big weight saver too. i remember when i took out my stock tokico/racing beat setup for the JIC Magic FLT-A2, the JIC were noticibly lighter than the stock.
Coilovers are a lot lighter. I didn't weigh mine when I installed them so I don't know what the savings was.
Same thing with the Corksport S and J pipes.

if you look at the box you'll see 2 black brackets that hold the sub box to the trunk frame. there are 4 bolts you'll want to take off, 2 on the left bracket and 2 on the right bracket (14mm i think) that hold the box to the brackets. The bolts are screwing upward so you'll have to look up at the box to see it. Once the 4 bolts are taken off, and the wires taken off the amp, the box will side out if you pull on it.

by taking out the sub, amp, and enclosure you'll save about 25 lbs.

so is the smp and sub still going to be there? or does it all come off with that. ..because I see the four screws but I don't wanna lose the sub and everything.

Since my CD player died again for the 10th time, I decided to remove the sub enclosure. That crap is heavier than I thought.

Screw the kenwood, no more music till I gets a new cd player.

And a new manifold. Cast iron anchors right in front of the axle... nice

replace the front bumper rebar with the JDM one... it is plastic... remove the rear bumper rebar (JDM rear bumpers don't have them and the bumper is more "trim")... that'll save a lot of weight

I'm not willing to give up any of my crash protection, but I might replace the front bumber support with a round tubing part if I think I can match the strength and reduce the weight. I'll know better after I pull the front bumper cover off tonight.

I'm going to be replacing my stock racing beat setup with some Ksport Coilovers in 2 days...

I'll take weight measurements and post them on Sunday.

Same thing with my Miata. The stock shocks / springs are way heavier (probably mostly due to the spring weight as it's much larger) than the Konis / GC coils.

Thanks. I'm curious to see what I saved with those.

Okay, here's how it shook out.

Stock front struts (spring and shocks) were 20 lbs apiece

Stock rear struts (springs and shocks) were 17 lbs apiece.

Total STOCK suspension weight was 74 lbs

K-Sports were 12 lbs per corner front AND rear

Total K-Sport weight was 48 lbs

Total weight savings was 26 lbs

All weights were done on 1 scale of a 4 scale digital corner balancing kit, so it was accurate. I'll have access to pics we took later, if anyone really wants to see them.

damn, that's pretty significant!

That was my feeling too. I was surprised that the front and rear ksports were the same weight as well.

I've got side by side pics as well. My buddy still has his camera with a photo documentary of the whole install.

Maybe I'll post up a new thread somewhere.

Oh, good point. My 17x7.5" Kazera KZ-B's with 215/45/17 Hankook RS2-212's weight 44 lbs as a package.

Tomorrow, I may bring one of my stock racing harts with 215/45/17 Falken Ziex 512's to get a baseline weight on that...
