For anyone who hasn't looked at what CR has to say about the Proteg, you really should check it out. I don't have the April handy right now, but they do RAVE about the reliability of the vehicle (which, by the way, for the last couple of years has been higher than Civic or Corolla -- a fact I can't believe Mazda hasn't touted!)

You may have to be a a subscriber to access this, but check out the overview report of the Proteg5 at CR's Web site...

Your user name kicks ass. (I guess me being an MSU alumni doesn't have much to do with that... lol) Coolness. :)

My protege5 was problem free, hell, my 1990 LX had 170,000 miles (most of the last 20,000 from autoX) and it was problem free as well!

13 thousand miles since Feb of 03.

Only problem was caused by me. Dropped the MAF sensor on the garage floor while installing the K&N intake. OOPS!

Oh, one of the bolts fell out of the exhaust heat shield with less than 3000 miles on the car.

Other than that it has been a great car.

Got 28k+ on mine and no problems that would require a tow truck. Had that cold stutter thing but the hubby worked his magic and that's gone now so no complaints. Love my P5!

9000 km's

Got moonroof realigned.

Vibration and pulling left and right (getting that fixed this week)

Overall very good, but not as good as all of you i see (jealous)

I would assume that if the Protege is a great, reliable car then the P5 should follow? I also have a 1990 miata which has just over 100,000 miles - original clutch, original tranny...( knock on wood!)..everything original except timing belt and filters and tires.

no problems with my protege... i got my protege because of my damn mx3... that was a money pit but i loved it :(

within a month of owning it the AC condensor/core etc was replaced, wouldn't keep alignment(camber) and finally the last big thing was the tranny. it decided to go at just under 90K. the first owner must have really beat on it, cause my brother and i were fairly gentle. with only 88hp you had to give it a lil extra just to stay with traffic :o

well 2 years in november and i have had a few probs w/my mp3...on 3rd motor...they still have yet to call back as to why they keep going...and has been at the dealer at least 6-7 times now for something in regards to the cooling system for the ac...damn idiots up there dont know whut they are doing...and this is a bit off topic but...i took my car up there on thursday to show them that my thermostat was stickin and the like ppl that place the ticket i use the same guy and well...he saw that it was getting hot right after you turned the car off...and well i told him i needed it for the next morning and that i would bring it in the next morning...so i did and i went out of town to a car show and come back monday morning and they didnt do a damn thing cause they couldnt duplicate the problem...and he has the nerves to tell me if it happens again then just bring it right in...that does me no good cause if i do that then they will just keep saying the same thing until the thermostat sticks on them and it doesnt do it every day of the week "yet"...only happened twice so far..but seems fishy to me...i hate dealers

but i keep my car cause i love it to death...just wish it has been less problem free...i got 40000 on it by the way also..26000 on first motor and then 7000 on the 2nd and just bout to hit 6000 on this motor...see how long it will last

Well, just looked at the latest poll results.

Wow... the Mazda P5 IS a very reliable car... except for the auto tranny ;)
