Protege 5 year 2003

It uses a timing belt. For USA cars the change interval is 105k miles.

Also it is an interference motor so it is a good thing to change, it cost me about $700 at the dealer about 3 years ago. Which is better than replacing a motor because the belt breaks.

This is incorrect. Our motors are non-interference, and there are a lot of mechanics and auto parts catalogs going around saying otherwise. Please pass this on to as many people as you can so we can stop this disinformation.

Thanks guys.
I just bought a 2003 mazda 323f sport 2.0 (here in europe) driven 118000 kilometres. I think its the proteg 5 model in US.
I have been given wrong info about the timing belt by seller. He said it uses chain, but im glad i got confirmed that its belt driven so i know to change it in time.

Just got the car today. It looks great. My first Mazda ever.

Mazda service guys said that this engine has timing with chain.... Everybody alse says its with belt.
Im confused, what to do with it.....

What's the difference between an interference motor and non-interference motor?

simply means if a valve was to stay open as the piston reaches TDC it would bend the valve.
so belt breaks A valve is certain to be open and get bend and damage head and other things, very bad
