Protege 5 versus newer cars

One last (involved) question for the seasoned P5-ers: If you can put yourself in my shoes for a sec (about to pick up your first P5 in the next few days) what would be the first thing(s) you'd do? What would you do different than you did when you first got your P5? Immediately switch to a different oil? Tranny flush? Buy a bra to protect the bumper and hood from chips? Buy a how-to manual to learn how to perform some basic repairs? Invest in quality wax and other cosmetic tools? Buy seat covers? Upgrade the stereo? In other words, what steps would you take right after purchase to either address the car's weak points (and I gather there aren't many) or ensure better reliability? (Note: "Turbo the b**** and hammer it to the ground" is not an option, since this'll be wifey's car). :-)

If you get a sec to answer that, I'd sure appreciate it.

With every car ive ever bought ive always done the following.

Tune up: Plugs, PCV, Oil change, Check the air filter (id go K&N) (i keep a regular one for when i clean the K&N)

Mods:

K&N air filter.
AuxMod or Grom Audio for ipod

The only thing I wish i did with my car was have the sun roof put in the middle of the car not in the normal spot.

The first thing I did was replace the stock head unit for the stereo. The speakers came alive with the added power. Not too shabby but I want to replace the speakers here soon too. My stock spare tire sub was a lot louder.

Also make sure she is in alignment. I don't think mine was when I got her cause the wheels were wearing funny and the place I took it to said it was way out of alignment.

Cheap fix also - tribute washer nozzles. Cheap and easy and way better than the squirters.

I must say for a FWD car, the p5 handles great. My G/f has a silver mp5 and a few times she was right there with me while i was in my bimmer. I upgraded the suspension, sways, sway end links, and LCA's in the bimmer and her suspension is stock and there is a nice lil series of S-curves on our way to her moms house.. my gosh I was nailing 70ish around those curves just shooting out the apex's and she was right there with me..

I had to slow down a bit because she seemed like she wanted it more and I didn't want her to push it too much ( and i didnt want to get embarassed ). But again the mp5 handles like a dream.

The new SI's ( k20 ) are wow.. the interiors are nice, the digital gauge is nice, the 6 speed is great, plenty of pep down low ( torqueless wonder ) and on the highway it goes, without guzzling too much gas. They can run low 14's stock, even a 14 flat with the right driver, temp and track. Hefty price tag though, and beautiful styling.. but again.. i think they are too expensive.

With two kids, it's nice and roomy in my opinion, but she wants something higher off the ground.. go figure.. and no she doesn't push it when the kids are in the car.. I love the hatch.. and even though it's an auto tragic, IMO it looks great and fun to drive.

To ensure reliability I would check all basic maintenance and go from there (i.e oil change, spark plugs and wires, transmission fluid). Like Rockin03mp5 said check and make sure shes aligned, mine was neither aligned when I purchased the car. I personally think the stock stereo sounds good but you decide for yourself. If your going to be using the car for long trips I would definitely recommend getting a bra.

Anyways good luck my friend and enjoy!

^yep. Don't duplicate work that is up-to-date. if it has the maintenance records - bounce against the schedule in the owners manual. Nothing else needs to be done.

I would:
*check the rear wiper bolt (lift the plastic cover and check torque)
*do the MPV wiper stalk mod
*be dilligent about inspecting/lubing the calipers
*do seafoam treatment every 20K miles or so... Because we burn rich at WOT carbon builds up.
*check the air the spare tire.

Welcome to the club!

I think the first thing I'd do is find and empty twisty road and have some fun!

Congrats on the purchase of such a clean car.
