the p5 is a sport wagon as it is classified. the accord is a station wagon. there is a difference. :D

The p5 set the stage for sportiness (in a wagon dare i say). you couldnt do the things in an accord you can in a p5. would you consider the national lampoons wagon in a class along side a p5....i think not.

so?? mazda is still mazda..... Hyundai has greatly improved since the 80's, reliablity is up there with hondas and toyotas. Hell with their warrenty and their track record why wouldn't you buy one at that price?
You forget that before 2000, mazda was just a struggling brand with boring cars. Would you have bought a mazda then with its 626, Protege, Millenia or the MPV?? Only half decent car they had was the miata.

Check your insurance - it's a "wagon" or "sedan" - no such thing as "sport wagon". In the case of the wagon, it actually suffers as compared to the sedan because of the extra weight.

Check www.modernracer.com:
2001-2003 Mazda Protege5
1,998 cc / 130 hp / 127 lb-ft / 2716-2749 lbs / 0-60 mph 9.2 sec.

1999-2003 Mazda Protege ES
1,998 cc / 130 hp / 127 lb-ft / 2634-2687 lbs / 0-60 mph 9.0 sec.

You can find that by searching for Mazda 3 and checking the history at the bottom.

As far as sporty handling - check the skidpad on the 1998 Impreza Wagon (2.5RS) at .82g it beats what the Protege5 can stick at .79g.

I'm not doubting the Protege5 is a great car - hell I wish I had one instead of my sedan, but the Protege5 was not an innovation - it was a shot at refinement by Mazda. Did well in some areas - not so well in others.

Protege's are alot of fun to drive though!

The old RS wagons werent that sporty looking. and the RS had better skid pad numbers because it had bigger tires. skid pad numbers are based on tire grip(the stock dunlops are just average tires..they are a hindrance(sp) to the p5). if you took the RS and the P5 and equiped them w/ the same tires the p5 would do better. The reason i say it helped set the stage was because it had a sporty factory body kit and it had great handling. as for the extra weight that is just a given when you have to extend the roofline out and add glass(most of the weight is from the hatch itself). a trunk is just a cheap-ass lighweight part. as for insurance companies do use different terms for the same car thats why you pay more at some compaines than others for the same car given that all other variables are the same.....as far as i know that is.

OMG another car has 4-doors and a hatch and 4 wheels and a motor and a windshield and seats! damn them for copying!

Sorry :p just had to let it out...

More than likely, I'll be picking up an old Merkur from MPNick sometime in the spring (read: after I pay off the remaining 6k I owe on my ES) He has a ton of upgrades on the thing - I'm really curious how it will come together. Skidpad should be great with the upgrades - but, it's an older car.

Yeah ok... Sure they had trouble in the 90's . But mazda has been around for how long??? Let's not forget about mazda's legacy. Oh yeah, as for the miata being the "only half way decent car", did you overlook a little car named RX-7

RX-7 was out of production. And what legacy??? they had a RX7 and a miata....whoopie doO. Not saying mazda sucks but they are not great either. I put mazda in the same catatory as hyundais, cheap decent nicely built cars.

RX-7, Miata? Well what the f*ck does kia and hyundais have? I'll tell you, nothing but a good warranty.

Kia and Hyundai are relatively young brands as compared to mazda. Hyundai does have the Tiburon which is something.

I've seen some concepts from both manufacturers that if they ever move into the showroom would definitely alter some peoples perceptions.

True, but at this point we're not comparing apples to apples here when comparing them to mazda.
