Protege 1.6L question.

I am terribly sorry if someone has posted something on this subject prior to myself, or if this is deemed in the wrong section.

I have a 2000 Protege LX 1.6L, and I was curious as to what I can do to it.

I don't have the cash to shell out for a 2.0L engine, and everything I look at seems to be for that...

I'm not after much, just something to make my commuter car a little more enjoyable. If I were to get way into it modding my car, it wouldn't be for a while.

I want to personalize it, but I'm looking more for little things to do to the engine, I put looks last.

I was very discouraged from even keeping the protege since I don't know much about all of this stuff, and I considered getting another Town Car.

But if someone could shed light on my confusion that'd be great.

I'd be happy to answer questions if anyone has any. I don't know what about, but it's late and I thought I'd throw it out there.

Well, any info would be helpful. Thank you for reading if you've made it this far. (:

If you have any questions just ask, between myself, red99pro, Caedmon7777, and protefile we have just about every intake made for the 1.6. Also, a nice set of springs like the eibach pro-kit will make the little slotege handle decently and more fun. The nice thing about the pro-kit is that its cheap in price, good quality, and has progressive rates so the springs arent too rough while doing every day driving. Also a MSP(MazdaSpeed Protege) axle-back is a direct bolt on and looks better and gives jsut a little bit of sound with the rest of the exhaust stock. Also, OBX makes a header as well as Thunder which Protefile sells once and a while. Just look at my sig for other ideas.

Thank you very much for the sites and advice. I have decided to keep the Protege as a little project.

I have bookmarked this page as reference. :)

I'm in the same boat as you groovy! I too have a 1.6L LX, however I have been able to find some aftermarket performance parts for it. Don't know about you, but I have an automatic transmission and from experience, they don't hold up to well once you start putting down gobbs of power. Thanks Topher for posting what you did; really helpful, especially the TSI turbo kit. For the price and what you get, it really isn't that bad. It looks like a kit you might be able to build off of if you wanted to squeeze out more power. I've been debating on what to do first to mine as I am on a budget, and I've also been leary about a turbo kit since I'm not sure what the limits of the transmission are. I'd hate to blow a transmission, but then again, if I had a turbo kit it will just be for some added umph and not all out racing.

before I even start getting "well i have a turbo auto and its fine" from other members. I am going to say this, do not waste your time. you can run what 4psi on the stock auto and like 6-8psi on the FS-DE with the better valve body for the auto tranny. It is not worth it. As for that TSI turbo kit, expect to replace the turbo right off, filter, and find some form of engine management. The intercooler pictured is far too large for a 99-00 stock bumper, which means just to mount it probably will mean removal of the front bumper absorber, which I wouldn't recommend. Then even if you get it mounted, good luck getting the bumper to fit and even after cutting the bumper to make it fit half of that intercooler will be hidden.

If you are serious about having a decently cheap turbo setup with decent parts and only want to run low PSI. Create ebay account, look for stock MSP stuff, you can usually find the stock radiator, side mount, piping, turbo, and other misc items from the msp. now buy those or look for part outs on here I believe there is one right now with most of the items for $500 from another member. Have a turbo manifold made by someone local or someone online plenty of company's offer this service. Get it made with a T2 flange if using the stock MSP GT25R turbo or a GT28R, RS, etc.. turbo. get a stock s-pipe and some form of engine mangement.

So basically you need custom manifold, msp stock turbo parts minus the manifold and intake, and engine management. you have a relatively cheap and ok turbo setup for your 1.6. Now is it worth it who knows, also there are always gonna be hidden costs for any turbo setup such as gauges, oil lines, oil drain bung for oil pan, oil cooler(recommended), and random clamps and mounting hardware.

yo man i got a 2000 protege 1.6L ...where can i find intakes and strut bars! help me out dude!!!!!!!

I have an intake (cosmo short ram-air) that I'm not using. Strut bars... corksport, or get one from a Protege 5... you need the brackets. the bar fits, but it's close to the intake mani, so you have to space it up a bit w/ some washers.
