problem with the gauges!

hey, this is my 1st time posting on this message board, even though i have been reading the posts in here for awhile now. I'm posting because of what happened tonight. I raced a buddy of mine who owns a civic SI, with each of us holding 4 or 5 people each. He started to rev really hard and go full throttle, passing me by. Not realizing that he wanted to race, i had to downshift into second in order to catch up.

Eventually, i started to not only catch up to him, but pull on him, but then when i upshifted to 3rd while hitting redline, i being the newbie driver mishifted and didnt throw the stick all the way into the damn gate. As a result, the engine revved way past redline, which is when the problem occurred. All of a sudden, the gauges just died. I pulled into a gas station nearby, and found out that my hazards worked, my lights worked, and my engine was not damamged, it revved fine. The thing is, the needles for the speedometer, tachmeter, gas tank, and the engine temp gauge all point down, and the tach or the speedometer can't register how fast i am going; its just constantly pointing to zero. The gauges light up fine, but the blinkers stopped
working.

I freakin had to drive home shifting based on the level of noise my engine was making (wasn't really difficult to do, just irritating), and I am now wondering what on earth could have made that happen? Does anyone know like what part of the car regulates the gauges, and if i can fix it myself rather than take it to the dealer? Any feedback is appreciated from you guys, since i am sure that most of you guys are alot more experienced at cars then i am. THanks alot for the help.

The dealer should be able to give you another gauge cluster if you have not modified it. Just tell them that it malfunctioned. Brand new those are over $400 otherwise!

Wow what a weird problem....maybe it's something as simple as a blown fuse. I would also suggest that for something like that tho you should bring it into your dealer to make sure the problem is fixed properly.

thanks, i made my own intake with a friend out of a k&n filter and an airvent pipe. We kept the O2 sensor intact, and clamped it from there. The total cost was 30 bucks, 25 for filter, 5 for pipe. That couldnt be the cause of the malfunction, could it? Does this void any warrenty?

Make sure you check your fuses under the dash first. I blew a fuse doing the same thing in another car. It should prob be a 10a fuse. Get the owners manuel out and look for which fuses portain to the instrument panel. If not just pull them all out and check them. Let me know if this was it.... C-YA

Do yourself a favor, and put the stock airbox back in before going to the dealer - why give them any reason to screw with you, I think. You never know - even though it certainly has nothing to do with the gauges.

It is definitely an electrical problem - there ae no cables in our gauges. Check the fuses first. Is is possible you guys crimped a wire or something when making that intake? Maybe you accidentally pinched one of the wires for the gauges, and it finally cut out on you.
