Pro5 uses 4L engine oil?

I used to put 3.7 in my 02 P5 like the manual said, but could never get a reading on the dipstick, it always read extremely full. Actually, I couldn't tell where the level stoped, since the dipstick was completely covered in oil a good inch or so above the F mark.

I called my dealer to check into this. A service guy checked the Mazda info available to him and said that for the FS engines that we have, Mazda recommends an ideal level of 3.5 liters and that quote "in some cases the level may vary between 3.1 and 3.7 liters". The service guy didn't know what mazda meant by "in some cases". I cant for the life me figure out how a production engine can vary by over half a liter...the only thing I can think of that would explain that is if they used different oil pans or something.

Right now, I fill the oil until my dipstick reads full, which is a bit less, but close to 3.1 liters. My 1990 dodge colt with a 1500cc engine held more oil, about 3.5L.

Am I the only one here that cant fit more than 3.1 liters into my P5?
 
3.1L everytime? :eek: did you change the oil filter too?
you probably still have some old oil left in there,
did you drain the oil completely?
was the car parked on a leveled surface when draining oil?
 
Its:
  • 3.3 for an oil replacement
  • 3.5 for oil and filter replacement
  • 3.7 for a dry engine

In any case, I would much rather be under than OVER! Over will put so much pressure on everything it'll do more damage than running a bit under!

Same here. I've changed my oil 4 times already, and damn if only takes a bit over 3 qts. to fill just below the full mark. And just for those who question me.... I change my own oil, and have been working on cars for over 26 years. Car is on jackstands in the front, and I usually let it drain for 5 minutes or so (oil fill cap removed as well.) Then remove the filter after the pan is finished draining. Strange..... but whatever. I agree with phaudio as well. I'd much rather it be a bit low than overfilled. Too much oil in the system is not a good thing in the long run.

Yep, that is changing the oil and filter. I usually drain the oil when it is hot, so it is nice and runny, and I let it drain for about 10 minutes.

It is also on ramps when I change it, which also helps in making sure all the oil drains towards the plug hole. Although my earlier oil changes were done without the ramps and it didn't seem to make much difference.

When checking the level, I also let the car sit an hour or two to make sure the reading is as accurate as possible.

I just had another thought...what if the dipstick is actually the problem? You know, if the collar that stops the stick in the tube was misplaced or something, letting it reach into the engine too far. Oh well, who cares I suppose, I'm still within the (very wide) range mazda provides for. I'll probably get a bigger filter next time to allow for more oil.
 
if they put a new dipstick in, and its messed, u can claim they were liable for engine damage. it should have been replaced to OEM standards

No they didn't replace the dipstick or anything... I was just wondering out loud if the original dipstick was manufactured incorrectly or something.

But yeah, if it is the dipstick's fault, you bet ya they would be responsibe...the trick at that point would be to get them to admit that there was something wrong with the dipstick. That would probably never happen with Mazda.
