Pricing....

That is a good price, I haggled mine down to 14,250, and thought that was a good deal. After taxes, and all those other little charges, I ended up paying 16,800 total.

The invoice price for my Protege5 with all the options are $15355 (carsdirect.com) which includes $2500 factory rebates. If I were to put in my $500 college rebate, the price I paid for mine ($14625) is still lower than whats its supposed to be . (thumb)

Just a suggestion here.... go to www.mazdausa.com and search the inventory of the dealers around your area. (peep) Check out their cars and find those that have the options/colors that interest you the most. I did an excel worksheet of all the dealers's inventory that has cars that have ABS option. After that, I narrowed it down to several dealers that have the options that I want. And I just inquire each dealers individually and wait for them to court my business aggressively. (guns) I finally go for one that tried relentlessly and politel enough even thought I did not return his calls (lol2) (receive way too many phone calls from dealers (bang) ). The final price he quoted me was good enough to get me sign the paper .

If you can pay the car with cash, you can DEFINIETLY get a good deal!! (silly)

I was debating about whether to get Mazda3, but I know I will not get a good deal since its new to the market. Besides, the first year model is probably gonna have some problems in one way or the other. Also, since Protege5 is only available in 2002 and 2003, that actually somewhat leave the car pretty desirable in a couple of years time.

Hey, I even had a hard time looking for a used Protege5 !!

Nope its a 5spd They have the auto but I don' t want an automatic. I will see how much I can get them down too. I have heard some bad things about the 3. I think I will like the P5 more. How much does the price vary by location.
I looked up the Incentives at Edmunds and there is an Additional 1,500 rebate???????????? Whats this all about?

The invoice price is the price the dealer would pay if they bought 1 car from the factory. If they are big they get discounts on quality sold and there is always the dealer holdback. This is something the factory gives back to the dealer once they sell the car(not before), about $350 from the sales manager I talked with. If you look over their shoulder you can see the real numbers. This sales manager saw from my folder I knew most of what he was talking about so he leveled with me.

My guess would be they have over a $1000 bucks at invoice so keep at it. Keep in mind they do want to make some money. Since the rebate period is 11/02/2003-12/02/2003 go in at the end of the month and they will be looking to make deals for their monthly totals.

Be happy because my rebate was only $1750, you're getting a few extras on the house!

I bought mine (Red, auto, moonroof & 6 CD, leather) a week ago for $15300 + TTL. That price was after $2500 rebate, and it was $225 less than invoice and the exact amount of TMV price.
Since I have only three Mazda dealership around here, there was not much room for negotiation.
According to erockp5's calculation, they made $775 from the sale. And I think it's OK because they were very polite and nice to me.

Edit: I forgot to mention that they had to deliver it from another town 120miles far from here.

You mean to tell me you got an extra $500 off for college rebate??!! That's not fair, I'm in college too. Also do you mean to tell me you have a choice of mazda dealers? Here on Long Island, there's only 1 mazda dealer left.

The $500 college rebate is valid for people who are about to graduate or graduated from college within two years of graduation date. The exact information is available on the www.mazdausa.com. Most car manufacturers such as Toyota and Ford has such college rebates plan.

Most of the dealers usually ask you for your graduation date coz people are more enticed to buy the cars if there is $500 discount on the car. My $5000 discount from MSRP includes the factory rebates of $2500 and college rebates of $500/

Like my dad always says.... its pay to go to college. :D

As for dealers, I have at least 8 dealers within 75 miles radius from my place.

There is an Extra Rebate from MAzda? On Edmunds site they have 2,500 Cash to Customer
1,500 Cash to Customer
500 Cash To Customer

There is also a 500 cash to Dealer and I am sure you can get a slice of that. So I should take about 5,000 off invoice...not too shabby

Heres some more detail:
Sticker price 19,040
I paid 17,426 plus:
Service and handling: 595
Tax: 1131
Tag: 200
Total: $19,354
But, I was able to get 0% financing for 4 years.
All of these figures I'm hearing is doing nothing but driving down the resale value of these cars. Oh well! (dance)

0% financing is worth more than $1500, so your final price would be $17.8K. I don't think it was a bad deal since you bought it last year.
Anyway, what is "Service and handling: 595"? I don't understand it.

Well..... the resale value indicated in the Kelly Blue Book does not take into account whether the buyers get the rebates or not. The resale value is uniform across the broad so if you can get a lower price initially, the lower the loss of selling the car will be. Plus, the $2500 rebates do beat the 0% financing anytime if one does the math. My 4.5% APR will cost me $2000 in interest if I pay over the course of five years. Therefore, I still save $500 if I follow the usual payment course. However, my plan is to pay more than the indicated amount which allows me to pay less interest overall in the long run!!

Whatever it is, it is always a loss to buy a new car anyway. But what beats having to drive a brand new car out of the dealer lot? Right?? (spin)

That would be for paperwork (profit). I haggled with the dealership for over 4 hours on the price, and they wouldn't come down any more in price. I think it had something to do with them getting a check from Mazda. They said they sold it to me at their cost, and even showed me the invoice. I also noticed on the pink slip they fudged the numbers on the taxes, which kept the cost of the car at invoice.

I need at least one more semester to qualify for that extra $500 rebate. As for all the mazda dealers you have in ca, all i can say is, that's so unfair. NYC plus nassau county and suffolk county, combined we have mazda dealers, one is in the city, so parking is impossible, one's all the way out where I'm too lazy to even drive to. At least nyc gasoline has higher octane, and a price about 10cents cheaper per gallon.

First off, Edmunds shows multiple rebates depending on whether you go with 0% financing or not, etc.

Rebates I received on 11-3:
$2500 standard rebate
$500 grad rebate (applies to grad student at any stage)
$1000 dealer bonus cash (Edmunds says $500; maybe it's just $1000 in the region that includes Michigan? The dealer showed me the fax from the factory)
$250 for financing at 5.66% through Mazda Credit. Already refinanced at 4.05%, saving me $8 a month

Total rebates/dealer cash: $4,250

This was taken off the S-Plan price, which is very close to invoice. Ford employees and retirees can get four other people this price per year. It's probably worth a couple hundred, as most dealers sell P5s near invoice anyway. S-Plan also eliminates any doc/processing fees, which might be a bigger help.

In the end, I paid $13,348 before trade-in for a P5 with 5-speed, ABS, sunroof, CD changer, and leather. Taxes added another 1070 or so. Sticker was $18,985.

Because S-Plan is not negotiable, at least not in terms of the price of the car, I ended up with more money for my trade as well, $2000 as opposed to true value of perhaps $1,200. But this part is unclear. Maybe it really was worth two grand...

I got the calls back on the dealers. 2 can't even help me and 1 has a loaded p5 without abs or a roof rack and they are 200 dollars cheaper if you add the invoice prices up. I talked to the 2 dealers that couln't do anything for me and they said that I am getting a pretty good price. They could be full of s*** like any other salesman though. Edmunds true market price is 15,600 so they are 200 over that. I'll let you know the take it or leave it price. I plan to buy on Friday. The Sticker price is 19,800 and I can get it for 15,700 so my deal is better than yours now? They just took it down to 15,576 which is probably as low as they can go. I am going to see if I can get a mazdaspeed exhaust with that to seal the deal.
