Power steering fluid problem

On the way home tonight I felt a loss of power in the steering control while at idle. When I turned the wheel to it's limit I heard a little groan from the power steering and had a slight loss in rpm. After I got home I found that the power steering fluid level was well below the fill line. I noticed a bunch of fluid under the reservoir splashed about the engine compartment. I could not see any obvious breaks in the line, but it came from somewhere.

Anyone else have this happen? I guess I should be going to the mechanic asap.

My local mechanic took a look at it and told me the power steering pump failed. Anyone have this happen or is it just me? So now I am looking for a replacement pump. Is this something that might be covered by Mazda even if the car is out of warranty?

More likely its the o ring between the pump and the reservoir. they harden then leak. The o ring is a few cents and it takes about an hour to replace.

$9.25! I am very happy and went ahead and placed the order. Way cheaper than what I was going to do originally...replacing the pump lol.

WOW you are banzairx7! I was actually not expecting to get an answer...especially not an answer with such great information! Thanks!

Now I need to find the right size torx for that bolt.. :P

Actually that was without shipping. After shipping it's $14.52 for 10 o rings lol. Still way cheaper than a whole pump though.

Hmm I opened it up this weekend..but I couldn't find a place for those O-ring to go. There is one o-ring on the suction pipe (the pipe between the resoivor and the pump), but that was a different size and style from the o-ring I got from McMaster. Puzzled..

That's the o-ring that needs to be replaced, the one between the reservoir and pump. Yes the style is different. The x-ring I had you get from mcmaster is a different design that seals better. It should be the same size. That is the exact one I used on my 2006.

Hi,

I need to replace my o ring and found your old post about having 9 extra. I know it was a long time ago but any chance you still have one? should fit fine in a regular envelope and i'd give you a couple bucks for your trouble.

Let me know,

Thanks
