ive never looked into it so im wondering what people have paid or price they have been quoted to have their stock wheels powdercoated. im thinking of having them powdercoated a darker grey/gunmetal/hyperblack type color.

just paint em, i did. I went to meijers and got the high performance wheel paint and clear coat and did it myself. Im getting mine powder coated though as soon as my girls dad gets his stuff setup.

the reason you dont paint them and then powdercoat them is because you make yourself work twice as hard. Stripping the original coatings off the wheels is the hardest part.

Polished or bare metal wheels can be sprayed and cured in about 45minutes. Wheels I have to strip take days.

hi JOS3- I have called a couple places in our area and the lowest price i got was from Central auto body here in Grayslake. They said $100 on each rim any color. i was thinking of the same colors as you before winter hit. i bought an extra set of rims off ebay for my winter meats. i still want to get this done so maybe someone around here would give a better deal if 2 peeps wanted to get them painted. get back (thought)

Word on that. When Matty did mine it killed his sandblaster; I think he ended up having to send them out to finish the stripping.

the problem is i cant decide if i want to sell the rims i have and use that money towards new rims OR just pay to have my stock rims powdercoated. if i do decide to just powdercoat my wheels i think it would be worth a try to see if we could get some kind of discount for doing 2 sets.

When i did mine i just put them in the sand blasting booth and went to town. It took about 5 minutes per wheel and it got everything completly off.

true dat. If I had a professional blasting booth large enough to accomodate the wheels and air compressor with enough cfm output at the correct psi I'd be good to go also.

I am considering getting my wheels powder coated for my MS3. does anyone have any opinions on what color to powder coat, i got a black mica. also are the people that did get a powder coat job happy with the results/quality

I'm seeing some pretty high powdercoating prices in this thread...we use a powdercoater in Northern Indiana for our company and he's really fair...I would think he would charge about $25-50 per wheel in a custom color...I think there are some powders that may raise that cost somewhat, but he's really fair with us on stuff...I brought him things and had them done for a few bucks in a standard color he is running. The key is giving them the parts ready to roll...so they don't have any prep work. Powdercoating isn't rocket science and there's a bunch of them out there now all begging for work...too many so competition is steep.

i paid $40 a wheel for powdercoating on my old car, included acid dipping to get the factory silver paint off, sanding down the curb rash, and powdercoating. they came out awesome. I dropped a 3" stainless steel borla catback onto one of the wheels on accident and it didn't even chip.

You need to be careful when blasting the aluminum wheels... You should only use media, not sand. Sand is too abrasive and will pit the aluminum.. Also using high pressure could heat the wheels up enough to lose some of the temper, making them weaker...

BTW, My powdercoater is doing mine for 1/4 of the price he normally charges for my setup...

Normally he would charge $250/wheel...

Of course, I'm getting 2-tone done and multistage colors.... that really drives the price through the roof!!!

Normal single stage single color I believe was around $50/wheel with stripping.

BTW, mine should look similar to this when done...

I Want one of those "mazdaspeed" decals where can you find one?

I have the .ai file at home... I can put it up then.. send me a PM if it's not up by tonight.

With the .ai you can just show up to a graphics shop and have them print it out on whatever color you want. The .ai can be modified to any size without distortion... but the one I will give you will be actual size. I also have one for the windsheild and one for the rear where the mazdaspeed emblem would normally go..

Here's the actual car.

Thanks!

BTW, here's the .ai file.... I can't upload the .ai format, so change the .doc to a .ai after downloading and you should be good.

I also included the .pdf as some graphics shops prefer it.
