Just curious how everyone treats posted speed limits, particularly on open highways. Feel free to discuss your reasoning of why you drive the speed you do (fuel economy, safety, traffic flow, enforcement, etc).

I do about 9 over. 74-ish in a 65. If you drive the speed limit old ladies in Geo Metros flip you the bird as they fly by. If you get much over 10 over, you're likely to get pulled. Then there's the possibility that your speedo is off by some, so you've gotta watch yourself.

9 over feels like the sweet spot.

I’ve been experimenting with the exact speed limit. I’ll only do it on roads with a passing lane as to let others fly by. My intention is to try driving safer for my kid on the way and net some gas savings. But I agree, I’m finding that when 95% of the cars are getting up my ass then passing me, perhaps it’s not the safest after all. I used to drive 10 over, so maybe now I’ll accept a happy medium and try 5 over.

One of the biggest benefits I find of driving slower than the flow is that I never have to deal with the passing lane and the aggressive driving that comes with it. I can just lock in the cruise in the right lane and drive stress free.

Interstates are open game. I'll usually flow with traffic unless it is very clear then I'll sit somewhere between 70 and 80.

It the city streets I usually stick to the limits. In residential areas I sometimes run under them as I'm always keeping an eye out for kids and such.

It's the darndest thing. Even with the mazda body kit and the polished wheels, having a green protege people just do notice it. I've blow through speed traps and they didn't mess with me.

Guess I better watch it for a while now that I said something.

Y'know I was just thinking about the highway. On neighborhood streets, no more than 5 over, and usually right on the speed limit.

that is about what i do.

Lots of fixed speed cameras here and you'll get a fine and 3 points if you are more than 4 mph over the limit, it's getting really silly to drive faster now, you'll get a ticket through the post a couple of weeks later and it's not too nice (rant)

My last car, the Vauxhall Astra VXR I admit I done a few silly things in that and I won't say how far over the limit I went. But I have seen sense and typically drive dead on or slightly over the limit by about 2 or 3 mph. I never drive slower because I hate to feel like the old geezer holding up all the traffic :D Although I will drive extremely slow if someones tailgating me.

Only time I drive the speed limit is when some fool in front of me is...or unless I'm in a residential area, especially school zones.) Most limits are extremely, artificially low.

What kind of enforcement presence do you have out there in populated areas and on the long stretches?

ABS, stability control, vastly imrpoved tire design, handling, etc.... and we have the same speed limits we had in the 60's. I love the feel of acceleration, but I usually keep it below 10 over once I get up there.

If if makes you feel any better, I didn't change my driving habits one bit when my kids were born, and they seem to be okay. :)

My brother, who owns a WRX, told me about a STi-owning buddy of his who was pulled over on I-95 in Connecticut going over 90. He had his three year old daughter in the back seat. The cop really laid into him...

STI I-95 90mph Id say he was driving conservatively (lol2)

depends ENTIRELY on traffic/road conditions...

in FAVORABLE conditions (very light - NO traffic) on a 55mph highway, Im doing about 10-15 over usually in the 65-70 range.

if Im on the interestate in same said conditions... usually about 80-85 is where Ill hover...

Ive been known to go faster but this is GENERALLY where you will find me.

however, if road conditions are bad or theres traffic, you can bet Im not trying/not going over the speed limit.

In town, usually the speed limit or perhaps 10 over depending on flow, traffic density etc. School limits are adhered to, though why there is a limit when the kids are in class is beyond my comprehension. I can see a limit between say 7:30 till 9:00, 12:00 to 1:00 & 3:00 till 5:00.

On the highway I drive to the conditions, which means I fly when I can. But only when I'm alone. Other people in the car limit me to 10 over.

On average I receive a speeding ticket every ten years or so. No biggie. I consider speeding to be a victimless crime, unless it causes an accident, then I think the culprit should be hammered and hard.

Long stretches between poplation centers is unpatrolled most of the time. Huge police officer shortage here.

In town(s), the normal stuff.

One caveat about the Big Island....we don't have real police cars. All the patrolmen use thier OWN cars with a little blue light strapped to the top. It is not uncommon to see three cops at a traffic stop. One with a pimped out Escalade, one with a 05 Mustang GT and the other in a 4Runner. It drives most of us crazy that the City Council won't go out and get real cop cars for them. But the officers don't seem to mind as they get a stipend for it and can bling out thier cars on the taxpayers dollar. Grrrr....don;t get me started.

It DOES make for interesting speeding as you never know who that is behind you. All you guys know what the headlights on the Crown Vic look like, plus you can see the light bar. Not us.
