Possible turbo build. Got Questions.

My roomate has gained an interest in trying to get some more power in his miata. We've come to the decision that boosting it is probably the best way to go for what he wants. I guess this would be a good time to shed some light on what we are working with.

1993 Miata
110,000 miles (Its around 106 right now but I added some just in case this doesnt happen until this summer)

Anyway on to the questions that need answering:

We realize this is a pretty high milage engine, we've decided the best route would be to have a second engine (most likely purchased from a yard) that is ready to go before boosting. What do you think about this? To high milage to boost or does it still have potential? Keep in mind this is his only car.

Next thing to worry about is budget. He would really like to keep the total under $2,000. Is this a realistic price range or are we just dreaming?

Engine management is obviously going to be a must. Going along with the budget he would like to maintain my first thought was megasquirt. Would this be suitable? We are not trying to build an all out race car but he would like to be able to get on it everynow and then and still be safe.

Probably the biggest thing to worry about here is the most obvious one. A turbo. What is a good turbo that can be had for a decent price. If we could source a good turbo (no shaft play, etc.) off of a volvo or turbo diesel benz would that be suitable for a miata?

Of course there are more things that need attention than just these but I figured this would be a good starting point to get an idea of what we are looking at. If any additional information is needed about the car just let me know and Ill do my best to provide it. Thanks in advance for any help.

comment about your budget: you can DIY for that price if you shop around. How involved do you want to be? Depending on how good of a shopper you guys are, you can get some real good deals. Of course you can get a Greddy kit(bolt on), good exhaust, intercooler, and a MS for under $2k too. Depending on your tuning abilities, you can get anywhere from 150-200 hp with this. (i got 156 without any engine management*)

Don't worry about the miles, I put a turbo on at 164k and it ran great. I'd be more worried about the clutch.

As far as turbo size, since this is his only car, you're gonna want to get something properly sized to keep out lag while daily driving. I'd go with a t-28, and if you did go with a DIY route, you can get manifold/DP easily for this combo.

*my engine did eventually burn an exhaust valve at 197k miles, but that was a result of using pump gas at the race track. The compression at the time of the other 3 cylinders was about 160. When I took off the head, the cylinder walls still had the croshatching on them. Mazda made the B6 to last... Of course your Miada may vary...

Send your buddy here for people that eat and breath budget turbo builds.

If you want to turbo your miata, check out www.bellengineering.net theyre probably your best bet. The milage on the car shouldnt matter if it was taking care of.But i would suggest rebuilding the motor you have rather than getting a spare from a junk yard

Checked out both of the sites. So far its looking promising. I think we will probably try to source a T25 or a T28 (most likely from a SR motor) but nothing will be happening for a while until we get everything planned out. We are also going to go rummaging through some junkyards and see if we cant find anything useful.

just out of curiosity would an RSX turbo work for the build? i can't find anything that says it will or will not work for the car.

Alrighty, theres the owner of the car. :). If its a kit pretty much all of the major components would be usless besides the turbo. The exhaust manifold won't fit correctly and my guess is the oil lines and such would not be the right size. Now if you are looking at a turbo by itself I don't see why it wouldn't work with the right manifold etc.

I recommend talking to Corky Bell. He may be old school but he is good school.

..if he tries to sell you any kind of electronic, stay away.

Old school, new school, doesn't really matter as long as it works school. <--Damn thats lame.

Serious about the electronics? Any particular reason?

Check the Miata section. They wired me a faulty Xede and eventually my MSM had enough. I got the constant "It's just your car reacting differently.." when in reality the Xede was causing it. When I first got the Xede I was missing some wires and they "re-wired" it. When they did, they ephed something up.

To back them up on their kits:

(Shh, don't tell Corky, he doesn't know..) His little red turboed NA (t25 I believe) and the MSM ran. The little guy could scoot. Of course the MSM out did the NA in power but they build some REALLY nice kits. They know the Miata's the best. It's what they specialize in.
