Just because there are many definitions depending on what background you have here is a link that has most of the views on it. The misunderstanding with reincarnation and nirvana is a few things:
Reincarnation- it is possible and likely that one will progress both forward and backward(i.e. hitler was reincarnated as a rock) depending upon how you act in this life, until they(soul) has the experience to achieve enlightenment. There is no wrong path to this end, merely faster ways than others. (which is also why buddhists are so accepting of other religions- they don't perceive them as wrong, merely slow)
Off the book with nirvana, the way I see it(and my buddhism is different than most) is that you achieve a oneness with the universe, an opening of conciousness and the discarding of human suffering, in other words, total inner peace....

i thought that they are reincarnatied untill they were the best thing(be it person animal w/e) then they reach nirvana

It has been said in the past, that since the brain retains "charge" for a length of time post death, it is possible that any illusion of heaven or nirvana is simply a dream induced by the on-going brain activity. That would explain a lot. Near death experiences have shown that people HAVE seen things while dead on an operating table. This can be taken in any way to be honest..People who are very religious, see the afterlife as part of their daily lives..Thus, when confronted with an experience such as death, they see whatever they want to..Whether it be heaven, hell, or my personal on-going 30ft left hand pacific swell..thats up to you..When you die, something happens..that you can be sure of..does it last forever..unfortunately I don't think so..but god I hope so.

Funny - people have a tendency not to believe something, just because they can't explain, justify or quantify it. Hello, the universe is bigger than us folks. I guess being egocentric is just in our nature.
so egocentric that many people believe that they 'know' god. or that the most powerful, all-knowing, unbelieveable thing can be described as looking quite a bit like my fat ass and named by a simple three letter word that some people read as dog...

I think that its necessary to give a bit more definition to the term of afterlife before a substantive answer/discussion could take place... of course I've taken a bit from every religion I've studied and made my own view. yet somehow the result of this collaberation means that the majority of those religions think I'm wrong and will end up not achieving enlightenment/salvation, so I've decided that I'm going for a leather couch in hell, I've almost got enough tokens saved up already :D

I believe there is. Each soul goes through transition and a growing stage while here on Earth. After the body dies, you go back to that "school for souls" in the afterlife. There's a book on it but I forget the name, when I find out, I'll get back to you. It's pretty interesting because it attempts to explain alot of why people feel and react the way they do based on previous experiences. I'll explain in a sec. But the reason for the soul and after life is to learn. Different souls advance and learn slower or faster than others depending on how many past lives they've had and what they've learned. The body is just a transport, the soul lives forever. We continue to learn even in the end or beginning (depending on how you look at it). You come back (reincarnation) when you want to try again or to correct a wrong. "Heaven" is sort of like school with advance souls teaching the younger more inexperienced ones about life on Earth. It's hard to explain... but if you think about Roman society and the clockwork of it (leaving out the bad things), it's sort of like it. "God" is there, but more or less someone who is in the backdrop. When you are in the afterlife, the other souls see you as light particles (or that little white light everyone sees when they die that people think it's the brain going out like a candle). Anyways, see these examples and I'll find out the name of the damn book:

A fear of drowning: A man has had a fear of drowning since being a child. He grows up to be a man and is still puzzled by it. He wants to go on cruise vacation but can't bring himself to get on the ship. He goes to the doctor to understand what's going on. He has no previous history of accidents or trauma involving water. He is put under hypnosis and tells a story of being a WWII sailor, stationed on a submarine. His sub was hit by a depth charger and sunk. The crew drowned slowly, it was not quick. After his experience, he remembers neighborhoods, places, people. After some time passes, he makes it back to the sailors neighborhood, the exact house and speaks with the mother. She even says the things he does reminds her of his son. Habits, the way he likes his sandwiches, etc. After a coming to terms with his phobia, he takes up aquatics and goes on his trip. He also keeps in touch with the sailors mother.
My story... I have had dreams of being in trenches... dying while protecting someone or ducking into a trench or building. Lots of military type dreams. I had not had any intention of being in the military. I had family in the military, but it wasn't something I always wanted to do. At 19, I joined after some problems with an ex bf that made me join to get away from it all. The only branch I wanted to be in was the Marines, for some reason and after I joined, it was different. I've felt the pull of it drawing me in ever since. To this day, I can't watch any war movies. I cry when I see WWII vets, Vietnam documentaries, etc. Ask Ghost, I can't have and have never watched any of those movies because I freak out and run away. I have actually left the house when he was watching Band of Brothers. And as most people can tell, I may be feminine, but I have alot of testastarone, which isnt entirely normal I guess. I believe I was a man, in the Marines during a period of war, died for love of country and apple pie. lol

But this is just what I believe. I'm not the most religous person in the world, but I am Wiccan. Which explains to some people why they probably think I'm a fruitcake. lol

I sure hope so, cuz this life sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, if there is an afterlife, doesn't that mean that there must have been a beforelife (you know one we had before this life)?

Did you not read my whole post?????? (rant) jk lol Yeah, there is a "beforelife". Unless your a new soul, you may not HAVE a "beforelife". Beginner souls (makes lots of dumb mistakes and take longest to mature )*feel free to bang your head on a table*, intermediate (been around the block a few lives before but still makes mistakes), advance (been hundreds of years with former lives and teaches others their mistakes, some no longer come back to Earth after their last visit).

Examples would be somewhat like: Einstein (advanced), Charles Mansen (NEWBIE = TOOL), etc. lol :D

don't worry, I still think you're a fruitcake :D

Exactly, I mean it's girls that make this life sucks so bad anyway! You are all a bunch of fruitcakes...

...but fruitcake tastes and feels sooooooo damn good!

B.S.... don't lie to me.. everyone HATES fruitcake. If I get it for Xmas, someone's getting a skunk, in a box, under the tree. Not only will you hate it as a present, but after about 3 weeks of being under the tree, the "scent" wont be the only thing stinking up the house.

Either that... or a boot to the head.... polls show that people like choices nowadays. :D hee hee

Lara seriously, I didn't really mean fruitcake, I was using it as a metaphor for women.

Why I gotta be a fruitcake cause I'm a woman yo??? jk... I know lol

Sorry Lara, it's not you, it's me! I don't mind reading your posts (they are usually very well thought out and your grammar and punctuation...flawless) but, that was a long one. :)

You felling better today?

By the way, who reads those articles in Hustler anyway? I didn't even realize they had print in those magazines until someone pointed it out to me.

"life is HARD man" (Foamy from illwillpress comics)

It's not been the greatest day to day, but I have a job to do.. and thankfully there will always be crime, so I've been occupied. When I'm not, I sulk around the house, watch TV, clean the car and sleep on a pile of unfolded clothes. lol

"but his soul still burns!"
does that mean when we die we get to fight with really big swords? (eek2)

that hippie s*** is pretty rediculous to me to be honest...

is there an afterlife, sure. is there a god, yes. took a science vs. theology class at my school and very interesting topics were brought up and the VERY intelligent scientist reaches a sort of agreement that religion can neither be proven or disproved. theres something in the bible that says something along the lines of 'if you can fully understand God, there no longer is a God" or something meaning the same. i look at afterlife and all other aspects of religion the same way.

The way I see it, if you believe in an afterlife, you should also believe in a beforelife. Meaning, an existence before you were born. How can one expect to begin at physical birth and live beyond physical death. Either you get a beforelife and an afterlife or none at all. Im afraid its the latter. Thats my 2 cents.

lol, yeah, great game

afterlife beliefs were created to deal with the pain of the deaths of people around you. its a perfect way to get out of a serious deep conversation with some kid about how his mother is dead and he will never see her again.

whatever makes you happy folks.
