I believe there is. Each soul goes through transition and a growing stage while here on Earth. After the body dies, you go back to that "school for souls" in the afterlife. There's a book on it but I forget the name, when I find out, I'll get back to you. It's pretty interesting because it attempts to explain alot of why people feel and react the way they do based on previous experiences. I'll explain in a sec. But the reason for the soul and after life is to learn. Different souls advance and learn slower or faster than others depending on how many past lives they've had and what they've learned. The body is just a transport, the soul lives forever. We continue to learn even in the end or beginning (depending on how you look at it). You come back (reincarnation) when you want to try again or to correct a wrong. "Heaven" is sort of like school with advance souls teaching the younger more inexperienced ones about life on Earth. It's hard to explain... but if you think about Roman society and the clockwork of it (leaving out the bad things), it's sort of like it. "God" is there, but more or less someone who is in the backdrop. When you are in the afterlife, the other souls see you as light particles (or that little white light everyone sees when they die that people think it's the brain going out like a candle). Anyways, see these examples and I'll find out the name of the damn book:
A fear of drowning: A man has had a fear of drowning since being a child. He grows up to be a man and is still puzzled by it. He wants to go on cruise vacation but can't bring himself to get on the ship. He goes to the doctor to understand what's going on. He has no previous history of accidents or trauma involving water. He is put under hypnosis and tells a story of being a WWII sailor, stationed on a submarine. His sub was hit by a depth charger and sunk. The crew drowned slowly, it was not quick. After his experience, he remembers neighborhoods, places, people. After some time passes, he makes it back to the sailors neighborhood, the exact house and speaks with the mother. She even says the things he does reminds her of his son. Habits, the way he likes his sandwiches, etc. After a coming to terms with his phobia, he takes up aquatics and goes on his trip. He also keeps in touch with the sailors mother.
My story... I have had dreams of being in trenches... dying while protecting someone or ducking into a trench or building. Lots of military type dreams. I had not had any intention of being in the military. I had family in the military, but it wasn't something I always wanted to do. At 19, I joined after some problems with an ex bf that made me join to get away from it all. The only branch I wanted to be in was the Marines, for some reason and after I joined, it was different. I've felt the pull of it drawing me in ever since. To this day, I can't watch any war movies. I cry when I see WWII vets, Vietnam documentaries, etc. Ask Ghost, I can't have and have never watched any of those movies because I freak out and run away. I have actually left the house when he was watching Band of Brothers. And as most people can tell, I may be feminine, but I have alot of testastarone, which isnt entirely normal I guess. I believe I was a man, in the Marines during a period of war, died for love of country and apple pie. lol
But this is just what I believe. I'm not the most religous person in the world, but I am Wiccan. Which explains to some people why they probably think I'm a fruitcake. lol
