UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH tonight is one of those nights where I hate my MP5 ...well i decided that since my engine already looks like it is a blood bath (red stuff) i would not go over board and paint it red so i am going to polish it well i got an offer from one of my freinds to do for $150 .welli said naturaly FU and Ill do it my self ... GAAAWWWWDDD DOES IT SUCK .. i mean you actually need to scrub and scrub and scrub for hours .. i am using the mothers Mag and aluminum polish also a dremel tool and this is where i am at so far

looks good, but you should have used something with a little more cutting power on the first few passes. the mothers should be used last to get the best possible shine out of it.

regardless, WOW! lookin' good, man!

You're right - There's enough red stuff under there for 3 cars ;)

Polishing is easiest if you take the cover off the engine. Water sand the whole thing with #320 wet or dry paper, 'til you get an even, dull finish. Follow with #400 paper, and then #600 paper, again using plenty of water. The "polishing" will then go lots faster.

Should look good when you get it to a "chromelike" luster though - You may then decide you don't really "need" all that red tubing.

If you think polishing the valve cover is alot of work, wait till you finish. Keeping it looking good will be almost a part-time job.

I did this to my Integra GSR, after all the work was done keeping it shiny and looking good was even more work. I ended up paying $200 to paint it with a crome finish.

I don't want to discourage you. It's looking great!

valve cover

well first thanks for the props again guys ... but i got a dremel tool but I dont think I got the right bits for it . also it has a metal polishing compound which I have never used b4 and since I dont have the proper bits .. its hard to get it perfect in one night .. I started it about 10:30 last night and cralwed in bed at about 2:30am my wife is not too happy with me hehe... also i willbe clear coatingit with a special clear coat so i do not have to repeat this again :O)

I did a ver similar thing on my Miata. I would highly recommend you remove the cover from the car for best results. I first used a sanding attachment for my drill to take the big texture down, then used sand paper to take the finish down smooth and take the ripples out of the drill job, then used an air grinder with big polish wheel and lots of polishing rouge to polish it up, then used some aluminum polish by hand. Took about 8 hours or so but think it turned out well. I also went ahead and cut off the cam gear cover just for fun. Don't know if that's possible in the same way on the P5 or not.

It's definitely not a perfect, professional job, but for an afternoon/evening sitting in front of the TV with some sandpaper working on it I think it was worth it. Note the reflection of the plug wires and dipstick handle in the cover :)

looks great..

well i cant wait to finish it ..but again this is one of those projects that i will work very hard and diligantly on and so when its done I can look at and say "i did that" not a major accomplishment but you all know where I am comming from ...

after you get it all mirror polished....you can always have it CLEAR powdercoated...that will keep it lookin good.

Actually I find my cover stays pretty clean. It dulls after a little while (couple months) but all it takes is some Mother's metal polish and 5 minutes to shine it up. Even when it's dirty it looks better than stock I think :)

yes you can cut the valve cover to show the cam gears, the gasket seperates it from the rest, problem tho is the engine block it self has a cover for the lower half as well, so you would probabaly only show the top half of the gears unless you cut the block as well.

mods

well I am only doing mods that i can put back if need to sell or trade in so i do not lose value so cutting the gear cover is not something I want to do

hey bud .. thats what I put above hehe

Well, if you're gonna clear powdercoat it as Sir Nuke suggests, you're gonna have to take it off the car for sure (to bake it) so you might as well take it off now, and make the polishing 10 times easier ;)

Not REALLY.....you said "clear coat it".....that could mean a LOT of things....you could have ment going to K-mart and get a can of clear plasticoat for $2.50 and shoot it.....I was being MORE specific and said " powdercoat".....which is VERY durable and will take more abuse and last longer over time.

relaxxx guys

dang !! stop takin s*** so serious guys I was just messing around and I would hope by now I would not have to be so damn spicific with you .. I mean if I say I will have it clear coated ... no that does not mean i will go to wally world(walmart) and do a red-neck job on my car .. I mean I hope you all are not one of those "have to be fully specific and totally describe every friggen detail " type of people .. aka Anal ... I mean take it for what i said ... i do not need to be clearified for or corrected.. I meant what I said i will celar coat it ..that means I will clear coat it

vavle cover ..

well i did it while it was still on the car i did not remove it ..what you see is only the beggining .. i am going to make it liek the CAI that i have it will look like a mirror

CALM DOWN! GEEEEZ.....you see....not EVERYONE knows how to do things the most correct way.....and thus was just attempting to make it clear.....i MEAN...if you were to have THOUGHT that you could just spray clear PAINT on it and it would last....just to have it get screwed up after a little while and then found out that people KNEW that it would happen and didn't attempt to tell you about it....well....that would piss me off.....

I was just trying to make it clear and HELP you do the job right the FIRST time...and not have to get into doing it over....

I have done hand polishing of intakes and other pieces before....its a LOT of work....and would NOT want to have to take it back apart to have to do it over a second time if I had done it MORE correctly the first time.

Here is mine...

In a way to get some money together for the rebuild. I had offered the Members of the Ottawa Protege Owners...Polished Cam Covers...

The deal was this... I install a polished cam cover on the members car and take the old one so I can work on it for the next member. So far, two have been sold and the rebuild continues!

Have a look...
