Please tell me it isn't knock? :(

I thought I heard a ticking noise with my 2002 P5, so I pulled into my garage and listened...no tick. I opened the hood and slowly revved up, no load. At 3500RPM, there's a massive rattling noise. like something is shaking the hell loose. kind of a tinny kinda noise...like if you were throwing tons of screws at sheet metal or something. If i back off it stops. If i push higher it stops.

I also have a very rough idle. I cleaned out the EGR valve per the how-to posted on this forum, but no luck. sometimes the idle is so rough the engine seems like it'll die, but doesn't. Sometimes startup is rough as hell, too...a couple times it just doesn't want to start, but if i crank it again after 2 seconds, it starts up like nothing was wrong.

i replaced the coil packs maybe 7k miles ago, and the spark plugs were replaced about 10k miles ago.

help! =(

check you mounts...my pass side is just about gone and creates funky noises and vibes.....the bad idle....egr or vac leak.....clean your maf....i had it on my car and cleaned everything and it's all gone and smooth...well minus the eng mount that is....and just tickin at idle or so is normal with our motors.....if you can get a vid of it and i'm sure we can go from there on here

it could also be a loose vtcs/vics intake screw that worked its way into the engine. there was a recall/tsb on it.

Honestly, it sounds like a heat shield to me. I would check all of them and see if they are rattling. My one remaining rattles at around 2500 rpm. Rule that out before anything else....have someone else rev the engine and get underneath to listen. Good luck!

thanks, guys...i'll give those a check. i sure hope it's as simple as a loose heat shield =) i'll try to get a vid tonight.

and i really really hope it isn't vtcs screws...i have a 2002. i thought 2002's didn't have such issues! and if a screw really got in there, i'd hear it across all RPM, not just one very specific range, no?

iirc back not to long ago some guy had a screw loose and you could hear it knocking around immeadeatly. he had a video. hope you get one. ill see if i can find his.

figured it out!

i took it to the shop and the mechanic looked at it (for free!). turns out it's the cat heat shield =P so mazdaspeeder got it right!

now i just have to take care of that low idle. and my brakes. and that slipping clutch. and the lower control arm bushing. and the busted back passenger door. and the slow leaking tire.....

your list looks like mine almost...HAHA....the never ending story of owning a car(cheers)

It was doing this sound for one week and last night i went to my mecanic. He jacked the car and simple remove the cat heat shield...cost me nothing.

Clean EGR and replace the PCV
seafoam the engine

and the slow leaking tire.....
At a gas station with an air pump. Empty the tire. Refill with 'fix-a-flat' and finish airing it up.
