hi all,

i am trying to change the gear oil in my MT
the car is a 2002 protege es (2.0 L engine); manual transmission.

The only things I found at Napa and Adv Auto Parts is
Valvoline 75W90 (GL-5) and Coastal 75W90 (GL-5, GL-4, GL-3); I got the Coastal... but have doubts if I should use it.

I saw that people recommend Redline MT-90 but I have not seen it locally.

Could you:
1 - tell me if the Coastal I've got is OK; or
2 - recommend me something else that is more readily available;
3 - or just let me know your thoughts ;-)
and if redline is god's gift on earth, i will get it ;-)

thanks - Neko

got mazda 75w90 oil

hi,

i got mazda's oil 75W-90: just as expensive as the REDLINE's but not synthetic.
it says "premium front axle lubricant"
Mazda part number: 0000-77-5W90-QT
meets API GL-S (note: not GL-5!)
i asked mazda (though the people i talked to did not seem v knowledgeable) and they said this is the oil they use in manual transmissions, and that i should change the oil every 60K.

any thoughts?

How about Mobil 1 synthetic? That should be readily available.

Hard to go wrong with Mobil1.

The 75w140 will be thicker when hot. Not sure you want that. If the thinner oil has all the properties that the OEM wants, why go thicker? It will give you slightly worse fuel mileage as there will be greater pumping losses. Probably negligible.
