Just so nobody tries, I took an old 486DX laptop and tried to get it to play MP3s....doesn't work. Win 95 takes too many cpu cycles for any version of winamp to run. Even with a 30 second buffer, the output catches up to the decoding.

You sir, are wrong

I did successfully run mp3's on a 486sx25mhz with 4 Megs of RAM
Media Vision 16 Soundcard

But you are doing it all wrong.

Windows 3.1, not Windows 95
and
Winplay3 not Winamp

Inside Winplay3, there are lot of options for decoding. Hell you can decode an mp3 at mono:8-bit. I was able to playback Stereo:16-bit without a problem.

Hahaha, thanks for reminding me of my younger geek days. I think I'll download ImpulseTracker and look for some *.MOD,*.XM,*.ST3, *.IT files.

Here's a file to get you started/startled at what we used to make due with before mp3's. Winamp can play it too!

689k file size : 10 minutes and 47 seconds of Happy Hardcore Mix.

Incidentally, we were creating, editing, and listening to these on 386/16mhz - I can remember actually recording these to tape for friends of mine in high school.

Well there were other complications, first off, there was no sound card so I had to get a PCMCIA one, which happened to only be supported by Win95. I tried working with 3.1 as well as DOS but the card wasn't soundblaster compatable so nothing would work.

Anyway, the laptop makes a great test server for my web projects. I've got Slackware Linux (the smallest distribution I could find that was also available on floppies), Apache, PHP, and MySQL running on it beautifully. Its very stable and if the power goes out, the battery kicks in!

My friends and I used to use ScreamTracker, an old DOS program, to make techno songs on a 386. I've got a tape of them buried in my room somewhere.

EVADE!
i just wanted to know how did you mount your deck under the console?
is there someting you bought or designed to make it work?
thanks!

used a mounting kit that was cut to fit nicely, and epoxy plus screwed braces in the back to hold the deck and mount. it took out the ash tray and lighter and use of the cup holder , but it would of been better to mount it futher back so i could put my drinks there. i should took pics when they were installing it at my friends shop!

well overall your car is tight with all those mods. nice set-up.

thinking what to do next to my set up? more screens? still need some subs in the back. just tight on cash

i have the pioneer dvd player plus screen in the front, 2 kicker 12" 7's with the 900.1 phoenix gold amp. i am getting 2 7.2 in screens and mounting them on the headliner at angles right above where the stock seatbelts would be. i was going to do the headrest thing but then i got racing seats!!!!
