I like the idea, but not the materials. I'm hoping to try and paint all those pieces a dark red to add contrast (with the black) and match the rest of my red trim pieces.

Hmm.. Gotta be honest and say I wouldn't do that. In you pic alone I spotted a very obvious gap. By the SRS writing for the passenger airbag, it's lifting up some. I can only imagine what the Texas heat would do to it. (flame2)
