My Speed 3 comes in next week and was told by multiple people to not let the dealership wash the car and if possible to keep the plastic on the car to prevent the car from getting swirls. What do you guys think?

never heard specifically about dealers messing up the car wash. but generally speaking, i'd rather do all that i can myself rather than leave it to some one else... especially a dealership.

Yes, if you can get the dealer to agree not to wash the car, and you do your own detailing, that is the way to go.
They will try to prep the car for pick up which is remove the plastic and detail it. Chances are it will be some kid that washes it with his dirty microfibre cloth and an inexperienced rotary buffer leaving buffer trail marks in your paint.

As soon as you get the car home, remove all plastic, wash, clay, wash, wax.

Can you take the car home with the plastic still on the car? I have never heard of that.

I do not think you would be better off driving it with plastic all over it. GOOD dealers take off the plastic, and have someone wash it as part of the dealer prep. My dealer has a company come in to wash them. Besides, you have to understand, your car will get paint chips from rocks, swirls in it from random things, and door dings.

Just pick it up, and when it is warm enough, wash and wax it yourself.

Yup, mine had one distinct set of swirl marks on the hood from a dirty towel or wash mitt. I should have told them not to wash it.

I would ask them if it is possible for them deliver the car to you without doing the dealer prep. It also give you the option of installing the from plate and running holes into your bumper.

how can he/she be 'inexperienced' if that is all they do?
my M5 was perfect when I picked it up, no swirls, shiny as can be. the 4 'new' cars I've ever had were all delivered in great shape, detailed well. they only ones I had issue w/ were used, particularly a black '94 '626, but thats no fault of the dealer prep.
good dealers employ a detailing dept that does prep all day long. if you have concerns, maybe ask to meet the detailers first.
