If you are wondering why it doesn't curve down like some others you may have seen, it is because this is the intake for the automatic. The intake that curves down to the transmission doesn't fit properly in an automatic so AEM designated the same intake for the 2.0L auto's as the 1.8L Protege's.

Welcome to the world of aftermarket parts

I paid $163 USD. At least I know my intake has been tested and was an optimal configuration with tubing widths and angles.

Looks like you bought the bosal. $360. I could buy a muffler for ~$100 and get a custom mandrel bent exhaust for about $100 more. That is a lot cheaper too, yet you chose to buy an aftermarket product. "poor soul"
I don't think I have to defend this. I don't think my intake is a piece of s*** like you so rudely stated.

Nice choise of words.... That was a little harsh man. Anyway, I think there is always gonna be someone who calls buying aftermarket performance parts a waste because they could do it themselves for cheaper. My advice, "go right ahead and do it cheaper then". The end result will almost always be that the person who spent a little more money will end up with the nicer looking product. I'll be getting an Injen in the near future so my Carbon Fiber MHP will be up for sale.

WHere did you get it?

$160 for the AEM is a great deal! I think it looks sweet, and when ppl make there own they never realize what factors go into an intake. Material, angles, tube width, and all of these factors make you lose or gain HP, so i say right on with the AEM. If you want to really mod your car, you cant do that type of stuff by yourself. Anyway, if you could hook me up with a link, thatd be great.

That isn't what I mean. It just seems like a lot to pay for something that is almost made of nothing. think about it, two pieces of mandrel bent pipe and hose clamps for 200 dollars. It just seems like a lot to pay to get something that is so little

Hey Apexi, just curious as to why you are getting an Injen to replace your MHP?

Yup, the car is filthy dirty but if I clean it, it will be dirty again in 5 minutes. Oh well, maybe I'll clean it anyway.

After installing this I noticed that the vehicle seems to have a very small vibration throughout. I can feel it in on the gas pedal, brake pedal, when I put it in park, you can see the steering wheel vibrating ever so slightly. I'm thinking this may be due to the lack of resonators with the new intake. Without as much sound cancelling itself out, it may be vibrating the car a little.

Either that or my car now boasts so much hp it's about to shake itself apart

Has anyone else ever noticed this. The intake is definately attached properly.

I just don't like the little fitament problems. Wheelguru spent the extra 20 minutes on his install and viola....his fits with no problem. I just feel like playing "Surgery" with an intake install. If you remember that board game...to much one way and you'd get a buzz, too much the other way and you'd get another buzz.

The AEM is also powercoated with a heat reflective paint to aid against heat soak. So, It's not just to metal pipes and a filter.

It's like APEXi said...do what you will with your money. Lots of people (like me) don't have the time or know-how to design their own stuff. So we'll spend a little more money, yeah, but we'll also keep AEM, Bosal, etc. in business and lookin' for the next killer mod.

Shawn, by the time you read this post, has your vibration gone away?

did you disconnect your negitive battery terminal when you did the intake install so that your ECU would reset? if not....what you are probably or did experience is the fact that it had remembered all the information the MFS had been sending it and NOW it saw something different......and it takes just a little while for it to LEARN that the new intake is there and to adjust things.....

or then again....maybe it IS the MASSIVE HP gains you got....

I thought I did a pretty damn good job on mine. The piping is mandrel bend 2.5 inch aluminized steel. To paint it I used high temperature ceramic engine paint on both the outside and inside. I also sanded the inside down with fine grit sandpaper to make it even smoother. I found this site that will do a walkthrough for the whole project. It's not using our car but who cares.

The small vibration is still there. I disconnected the neg terminal during install. I listened and felt the engine and everything seems to have the slight vibration. It sort of sounds like it could be coming from around the throttle body. It could very well be a normal change that occurs when removing all those resonators. Those things cancel out a lot of sound and therefore vibration. I'm not too worried about it. I've triple checked my install and everything looks very clean and well connected. Perhaps the ECU will adjust somehow. I like the better throttle response so I'm keeping it on anyway. I'm sure nothing is getting damaged.

On a side note, has anyone here ever gotten a steel braided radiator hose? I think it would look really sharp.
