Performance chip for CX-5

Anyone seen these or bought one and tried it out yet? First I have seen of them and curious if they are worth the money. Someone feel like being a guinea pig?

This is garbage.

1. Remapping an engine costs time and money and lots of dyno time. Who here thinks they went out and got a CX-5 to do this? Nutcrack bike enthusiasts volunteer their brand spanking
new bikes to be used as a dyno test rig, in exchange for the free exhaust pipe that gets made. I don't think there's a Joe Family with car payments who would do the same.

2. Your CX-5 is stock. Fuel re-map only works one of two ways - to address engine modifications (usually for racing), or to at least get rid of the emissions/noise testing flat spot.

3. Your CX-5 is already a 'high performance' stock motor that happens to be tuned for fuel efficiency and designed to last as long as your payments. Note that one of the first things a tuner will do is to lower the head to raise compression. The skyactiv is already a high compression engine! This performance aspect is lost on a lot of people , but your engine already hits above it's weight.

i can go on and on but the acid test is this:

If this were a true, bonafide product, they, or more better, externals, would post dyno charts of stock CUV's without the chip VS. stock CUV's with the chip.

You will never see this because well, no one races these CUV's, so there's no demand for this sort of thing. The very fact that it would be 'stock' vs 'stock' should say everything.

This chip is a waste of your money. If you want performance, keep the trunk empty and use the full powerband (rev the snot out of it).

Thanks for your input. I was kinda thinking the same thing as I knew this engine was designed to milk every pony and mile per gallon that it could already. I wouldn't think anything more would be even achievable without modifying something other than the ECU. It appears that they are somewhat generic because multiple vehicle models are listed, but I find it strange that they would even market such a product for the CX-5 for the reasons you mentioned. Some kind of chip for the turbo diesel CX-5 might be worth looking into though.

If anyone does buy one of these to try out. Please post any results or lack thereof here.

Excellent post Watermelon!

Some small companies will do anything to get you to part with your money. If I wanted more power I would have bought a different vehicle. A chip isn't going to allow you to do anything you can't already do.

I might just put on the performance chip sticker to imply I have it, then no one will mess with me.

Weird how the seller has so much positive feedback, although the average gains posted aren't even detectable by the but-O-meter. Psychological horsepower and fuel economy is tricky!

I have no need for garage budget hack engineering warranty voiding overpriced placebo device.

Hi,

in the uk there is a 150PS 2.2 Diesel and a 175PS version. Mazda don't let you have the 175PS in the 2WD version I would have prefered 175ps without having to buy the top of the range model. If the engines are basically the same the difference in output would be programming on the chip. In fact volvo sell a chip upgrade as an option on some of their cars so this type of upgrade is endorsed by certain car makers, but I fully take the point that who would have given that tuning company a brand new cx-5 to play with!

The Volvo chips work on turbo-charged engines by opening the waste gate less (increasing boost pressure). There is no way to do this on a naturally aspirated engine.

The reason Volvo doesn't sell the cars with increased boost pressure to begin with is because it causes more strain on the cooling system, engine bearings, oil and all parts of the drive train.

Hi MikeM,

the Diesel engines in the uk are turbo charged and its the same displacement engine but 25 PS diffence. Of course on non turbo engines you have a problem. VW sell a 140PS & 170PS turbo here do you have these versions in the states? Back to the original point yes you do need to be VERY wary of what is being offered but it doesn't its ALL crap. You could argue that Volvo have latched onto this as a nice little earner for very little effort.

This thread has nothing to do with diesels, see post #1 by OP in Seattle, Washington, US regarding crap chip for only engine in CX-5 in US market, a NA gasoline engine.

Sorry,

I didn't click on the link I just read the bit about a chip.

I thought diesels might be on their way to the US, but I guess you'll get the 2.5 petrol as talked about on this website first.

cascadia did mention turbo diesel in post #3 though(wink)

In the US for CX-5 we expect the 2.5L gasser and turbo diesel in 2013, nobody knows when and which one will arrive first.

always avoid these...... voids your warranty and who knows what it really does to your engine. if you need more power then 2.0L, sell it and get a 2.5L.

Found the updated listing for this performance chip on ebay, and this thing must be magical!!! Says it works on every Lincoln and Mazda from 1986 to 2013!

They claim that this single chip is compatible with (among many others):
  • 2.0L Skyactiv-G in the CX-5
  • 5.0 V8 in a Mark VII
  • 4-cyl/hybrid system in the MKZ
  • 3.7L V6 in the 6/CX-9/Misc Lincolns
  • RX-7 and RX-8 Rotaries
  • 5.4L Triton V8 in the Navigator
If the same chip works for all of these powertrains, it MUST be freaking magical!!! You'd be a FOOL not to buy it!!!!

...
By the way, I've got some 100% gen-u-ine snake oil and premium property in almost-coastal Florida you may be interested in buying as well..... (nuts)
