PCM Flash - First Impressions

someone should dyno this before and after...im not saying people will be wrong, but people in general have a tendancy to WANT something to happen so bad, that they think they feel it, when it may not yeild and significant gains....

Mine was done today too, basically what 122 Vega said. The car pulls hard all the way to redline absolutly no hesitation at all, power seems to come on strong around 3000 rpm.

This is good news...too bad my dealer's Mazdaspeed guy is on vacation and the next closest dealer hasn't heard about the re-flash...

I was a skeptic too Razor, I questioned it from the start (just look at Boost's old thread). I wanted this badly, however, I couldn't have wanted it to be better than it feels right now. Maybe it will change over the next few weeks, who knows, but right now I think it is great. there is a huge difference, even when just cruising down the road, passing power, no bucking when you lift the throttle in gear, and so far no stalling.

Sounds pretty goo to me, and Chojin's Dyno is good enough for me.

This is the car I paid for! THe difference is unbeleivable. No bogging, no hesitation, more midrange power. I can easily accelerate in fifth gear now where I had to downshift before. The overall drivability of the car is wonderful. I have to go put my Injen back on now to realize it's gain too, I have a feeling I was missing out on that too!

Very Happy,

Britt

I second these impressions. And I have only had the chance to drive it in Silicon Valley rush hour traffic in 90 degree weather. It's great, I can't wait for my drive home after I get off work tonight when there are less cars on the road and the weather is cooler.

This is indeed the car I paid for.

I will be venturing off to the Dyno by oct 4th. AFTER I GET THE FLASH, and I will also install a knock sensor, and they have a wideband O2, they will plumb into my exhast.

Ill do a run or 3 at stock boost, just to see the gains with just the Injen. then I will start cranking boost, till I start getting knock. That way, we will all know what the limit is on boost. :D If I nuke my motor, your all buying me a new one. (upyours)

is this flash only done at mazda "elite" dealers or is it at all mazda dealers?

Thanks, --Bryan

My buddy is buying a 03.5 today. What should he be telling the dealer to get his flashed? Is there a Service code or something, or does he just walk in there like a monkey and ask the mechanic to "flash him"? That could yield some nasty results...

QAll MSP dealers were notified to flash all remaining stock. So this car he is buying should be flashed before it rolls off the lot. :D

lol.. yeah dont tell him to say flash me..... but yes definately tell him to get the re flash on the car before he buys it. tell him to make the dealers find out about the flash if they dont know.

Yes, but there are probably some non elite dealers that can do this. In order for a dealership to be able to work on MSPs, they have to have sent at least one technician to the big Mazdaspeed training thing they had last spring up in Chicago.

Sounds great Craig -- I really want to see the results side by side of version 1 runs vs version 2 runs to see how they match up with Shawn's. That dip at 3k still scares me but make no mistake, I'm running to the dealer to get this flash. I remember all of the original concerns of the flash were that Mazda would retard timing and now it seems like people are complaining because they advanced timing. Ah well.

Superlative job by you - without your efforts I'm 99% sure we would have never seen this fix. We all owe you big and I'll chip in for a new motor if you nuke yours on the dyno post flash.(drinks)

I got it today after having it out with the closest Mazdaspeed dealership here. The service manager said "If you can get it done there, then that's where you need to go". So I had to drive about a hour and a half one way to get it. It is SOOOO worth it!!! No hesitation, bogging at all. It feels a lot smoother all the way from 1k rpm to redline.

Did anyone ever consider that maybe the sudden upward spike in tq then the fall off and rise again was due to Chojin shifting? Just a thought---maybe the graph isnt as bad as we really thought cuz of that. I know when I dynoed before in my Camaro when I shifted there was a spike, a drop, and it picked back up. Like I said though, just a thought. . .

No. Typically the graph shows a run in 1 gear - i.e. no shifting. That's why there's an RPM band on the bottom.

yep...but they're saying it *is* the open to closed loop switch, and that there is no way you're feeling it. i tend to agree...Actually, if you look at that Dyno again, there's a larger dip and less recovery in the stock PCM, while the upgrade sit's on the proper powerband until it hits peak. You'll see that the stock PCM actually has another jump at 5200-5500 rpm (where most of us say the hesitaion stops).

Perhaps in the coming days, as more and more people get flashed (including me) we'll find out more detailed info.
