Passing etiquette?

i think it depends on the situation. i had a guy flash his brights at me a couple times when he wanted over. problem was i had a car almost directly next to me. this also the way i look at it....i was already doing like 70-75 in a 65. so im already speeding as it is(illegal...right) i say if you want to go faster than what im already doing....like 80-90 or so....well you can just F***in wait. ill get over when i have the chance. so i got ahead a couple cars and whipped the car into the right hand lane so hard that i kinda fishtailed(body roll...looked like i was going to) and everybody dropped back like 5 car lengths....then slowly proceeded to pass after a mile or two. if i would have been going 65 in the left hand lane...fine flash them...but not when im already it over the limit myself.

somewhat same situation....was already speeding as it is. jackbag comes up riding my ass. i brake checked the hell out of him. i think he might have locked them up at like 70 or so. then he starts honking and flashing his brights. dude im already at 70ish....what if i would have had to avoid something in the road or had to brake suddenly...not as suddenly as when i checked him. so then i drove next to car on my right for a couple miles just to piss him off.

i have bad road rage...lol.

Nobodies stories beats the one my Dad had happen.

He drives a Semi Truck for an unnamed company. He was going down the interstate, and, HE has some of the worst roadrage I've seen!!

Anyway, he was going down the interstate and doing about 70 in a 65. A guy pulls up behind him tailgating, trying to get better gasmilage. He does this for about 5 miles or so. This infuriates my dad, as well as most ALL truck drivers. So, opertunity strikes

While going down the road, he sees a little plastic kiddie wading pool on the side of the road, and, Semi's have ALOT of suction behind them.

If you havn't figured out what he did yet, hehe, I'll tell ya. He swerves over as close as he can get to the plastic kiddie pool and sucks it in directly behind his trailer. He looks in his rearview and sees nothing but an explosion of blue plastic chips scattering through the air. Needless to say, the guy in the car stopped tailgating him. And I am sure he thinks twice before tailgating a semi to this day.

i got a ticket for doing 70 in a 65 in the "fast lane" there is no such thing as fastlanes i've found out. But Um, i still use it as the fast lane....

i like to follow then switch lanes and pass in teh slow lane if he doesnt and pass him that way....everyonce in awhile you get an annoying prick that likes to catch back up to you pass you and then slow down next to another care so you cant pass again...

there only called the fast lane because they are for people who are doing 65 in a 65 while someone else may be doing 55. i think rule of thumb is your not
supposed to drive in the left hand lane for a long period of time. thats why ur supposed to pass in the left lane. i believe in illinois they passed a law that you can be ticketed for driving in the left lane too long. something about there for passing and if it applies emergency vehicles can pass with ease.

im usually in the right anyway...until i need to pass.

yeah, but they don't enforce it.

I should not have to pass on the right...but I do it safely and carefully when the person in the "fast lane" refuses to move and is driving at or below the speed limit. I don't flash because really, who do you think you are? I'll match speed, back off a little and drift a little to the left and a little to the right, staying in the lane, just to let the driver know I would like to pass. But if you're going to tailgate me, we're gonna be cruising in the fastlane at 55 for as long as I can keep you behind me...

Checking my rage is something I am working on...accidents at speed=fatalities.

Injection from good old utah: I have so many different types of buttplugs here that its hard to find a standard for this sort of thing. I'll have some dude in a civic now and then that decides to get ballsy and ride my ass with the brights on, and i'll have some dude in a minivan trying to ram me to get me to move over. Dunno if you all know about Parleys Canyon on I-80 between Park City and Salt Lake, but past the summit it sets into 8% grades and you cant help but get moving 70-80 just on inertia alone. I've let myself cruise at 80 a few times and I just love the people that come flying up my ass at around 90-95 trying to get me to move over while I'm in the left lane (as per my experience it's the safest way to travel around here) in moderately crowded traffic. I usually get over but I cringe at the thought of them hitting the bottom of the hill. Dunno about you, but I dont know many cars that can take a 75 degree turn over 95.

thats touchy, if it was me i would wait to see what the person does, then if they still just stayed there after a mile or so id pass them in the right lane. yea its not right but i know if i got flashed by someone i would get angry, but then again i would never stay in the passing lane long enough for that to happen.

WHY would you get angry?

What does that mean? To me, a flash is a signal to let you know I'm there. It's amazing how many people never check their rear-view.

Slowing down/agitating some people will result in a gun in your face.

I've had it happen. I changed my tune long time ago.

This isn't the autobahn...I see you there, and I'll move over when I can, please relax. I don't put myself in situations where people ride behind me but I am unaware of them, so if they're flashing, chances are I can't move over, not that I missed them.

I'm not talking about a serious brake check, here.

Glad you changed your tune, but I'll be singing my song, thank you.

If you do that where I live you'll get your butt shot. Actually, you'll get shot for a lot less than that. In Memphis, the proper order for passing someone in this case would be to first, look to use the shoulder, if not possible to use the shoulder, then look to use the median. When that doesn't work, just drop back a little bit, then gun it and try to split the cars. If that still doesn't work, then just use someone's yard. If you STILL can't get around them, then you are allowed to start shooting

passing in the mainland sounds crappy

the one time that i drove in texas in my aunts suburban was so scary
i didnt know that you were only supposed to overtake people in the left lane, in hawaii, or at least on the big island you overtake on whatever lane you want to

I passed three people on the way to work in the right hand lane just today. I think some folks are missing the point here. I am not talking about running up someone's butt who can't get over (or can't ger over safely.) . I am also not talking about doing 90 in a 65, while you are doing 80. (Although I would argue in an emergency situation, you should move over... and since you wouldn't know if it was or not... why not just move over to be on the safe side?)

Arguing that you shouldn't flash people (based on good conditions) just because "you" (and you know who you are) would slam your brakes, or ride beside them, cut them off, etc., doesn't pose a good counter argument. It just shows that you are the rude / crappy drivers I want to avoid to begin with.

So:

1) If you are in the high speed lane...
2) Aren't passing anyone....
3) I approach and stay at a safe distance (no tail gating)...
4) And you can safely move over...
5) And I give you adequate time (30 - 60 seconds should be plenty - that is over 1/2 mile at highway speeds)
6) And you still DON'T move...

I should tap my lights once or twice, just to let you know I am there because I have to assume you don't...otherwise, based on the above, why wouldn't you move over? Either you didn't see me (hence the flashing) or you did and are just being an asshole on purpose. I like to give the benefit of the doubt and just assume you didn't notice me.
