what are you paintign it with?
since it runs across the engine bay you will need to use a high temp paint....you can find em at any part store, or the duplicolor metalcast paint is high temp also and that is what I used but you HAVE to use their specific ground coat witht hat paint(ground 5.99 paint 6.99)
process:
sand with 400 grit sandpaper, anythign with more grit will just take u longer.
you DONT have to sand the red factory paint all the way off, just have to sand the entire thing so the paint is scratched/dulled evenly on the entire bar.
I then did 2 or 3 (I cant remember, 3 i think) coats of the ground coat letting it sit 10 minutes between each coat and then half an hour before first paint coat(duplicolor suggest no more than an hour between ground a paint for their metalcast colors)
Once the ground has dried for 1/2 an hour I did 4 coats I think of the metalcast blue. again 10-15 minutes between each paint coat, light even coats are always better than heavy coats.
then I let it dry outside overnight just so I could handle it to put it back on, the first couple uses once on the engine so heat can really get to it is what cures the hi temp paint. and your done.
I will take a pic tomorrow morn if I can of my engine bay, I have the bar, valve cover, battery tie, bunch of caps and a few small things all painted with the metalcast.

edit: forgot to mention on all parts I paint I always wash after the last sanding or wet sand the last couple times. then once dry I use a tack rag(1.99@checker) before the primer coat to make sure it sticks well.
