Painting hood

I wish to paint the hood of my mp5..just the indented part black.

Should I bother sanding off all the paint (do not want to do this) or could I just put primer over top of the existing blue and then do a few coats of black then clear coat?

Just looking for cheaper ways to make my mp5 look a bit better, plus the black hood will go with the black badgeless grill.

Just lookin for tips of what paint would work best for this for someone on a budget.

Or if this is just a bad idea in general I welcome constructive criticism. Its just the hood as of now has a decal I do not really like on it put on by a previous owner, and I am worried the paint will be a slightly different color underneath from it just being on their for a while. I want the decal off. And a black hood would be nice.

saaaaaaaaameee.... im murdering my car out 100%
and my 2 cents, if your gonna paint anything...sanding is a must.

PERSONALLY

this is what i do/plan to do to the hood

sand it down with something like..150? maybe 200? then fine sand it with 400 or even finer.
prime, add 2 - 3 coats of black and clear it twice.

how do u plan on painting yours? do you have a gun? or are you gonna spray bomb it?

Even though I do not want to sand, I think I might have to. Planning on doing this later this week since I'm off for a few days. Def spray bombing I do not have the money for anything else. Currently working on a set of rims but that can wait since I don't need them til summer. wondering how easily the decal is going to come off...

Once its done I will borrow a friends camera and post some pictures.

yeah I was thinking the same thing for the same reasons..
i'm gonna first go to a place my friend knows and see how much they would charge to paint if i prepped the hood myself.
also another good reason why u wanna sand is because if you have any rust spots, stone chips etc you can fill those with body filler to stop the rust, rather then just painting over those spots which will show through in a few months.

I may also check out an auto painter. But I am fairly confident I can do this myself for about 30$ and itl look decent.

yeah i honestly don't see how it would look bad if you do even coats.
I might try to tackle this project this weekend actually..

weather is good all week for me, better get to it. might start tomorrow with a frozen face after i get some fillings

Do NOT spray bomb (chair) If you are going to do it, do it right. It should cost maybe $300 to have it professionally done. If you do it yourself, you don't have to sand down to bare metal, but you will have to scuff up the old paint, or anything else will not hold.

Depends on how it looks now. If no dings or deep scratches - lightly scuff sand (1500 wet) and paint. You only need primer for bare metal. Use Krylon Fusion[tm].

Rattle can should be fine. Do a couple of coats and clear coat to finish.

Well taking this vinyl off is harder than I thought. and I just remembered I have a friend that doesa lot of auto painted in his spare time. going to talk to him later today. Not quite sure what you guys mean by just lightly scuff. Just like scratch up the paint a bit? but do not go down to bare metal?

yea...if you want the paint to hold i would def use something alot grittier then 1500
here's the steps i would take if i was spray bombing the hood (i would never do that but if i HAD to)
1. wash hood with soap
2.Tape off area to be sanded
3. Sand area smooth with 400 grit, no need to sand all the paint off, just till the surface is equally smooth and dull when dry
4. take hood off car
5. Prep hood, tape off other areas not to be painted, wipe down center with some sort of degreasing agent (acetone works great)
6. Prime if you want, you dont need to, spray the black in even light coats, do like 3 or 4 coats
7. After at least an hour of dry time, spray the hood with clear coat, if you want matte black, go buy some matte clear (walmart) 3-4 coats
8. let dry for 3-4 hours, wet sand with 1500/buff if you want
9. put hood back on and enjoy, dont wax area for at least 3 weeks

thanks for all the help guys. still trying to removethe vinyl. not all theglue came off with it while i was heating it so its going to be a long night til im done this. lotta goo be gone to be used. In the mean time i have to go get fillings.

what kind of rattle can (brands, etc)?

u dont want to cheap out an paint on a hood as its one of the most prone parts to rock chips. the supplys u would need to do it right would probably exceed 300 dollars. u would need a compressor, decicants to put on the air line to keep the oil and water from the compressor from getting in ur air lines, an hvlp paint gun, air hose, 400 grit wetsand paper, then 600 grit wetsand, sealerand activater, basecoat and reducer, and a good urethane clear and activater. so if u plan on doing alota paint work to ur car it may be worth it but if u just want a paintjob on ur hood its better and cheaper to just leave it to the proffessionals. i also left out that if u want it to look decent u have to wetsand and buff the clear and buff it out. thats a whole nother ballgame though. but ur lookin at another 150 atleast to get those supplies.

yeah but only because he chose to go with a crappy clear instead of the more pricey(which is not expensive at all).

Alot of good advice on here.. My 2cents.. No matter what you use to paint your basecoat use and automotive clear.. Good luck with the paint job.. I wanna see pics when your done..
