Painted P5 Interior Doors

The only thing planned, and this might be a good idea for most people, is to get either leather or vinyl, black perforated, maybe grey, and replace the factory cloth on the top of the doors. It would be really easy to do, Im just not sure how to yet because the factory cloth is on the door perminatly.

I was wondering if the part of the door panel that has the cloth on it can be separated from the rest of the door panel once you take it off.

I thought I would share my interior work with you all.

To do this I took the door skins off, then remeved the top and bottom halves by unscrewing them from the back.

The lower sections when completely sanded down smooth, so the little vains are now gone. Lots of primer, wet sanding and a final coat of semi-gloss grey.

From my initial tests, it seems to hold up agains scratching and flaking. i guess what they say is true, its all in the prep.

This was allot of work, and I had the door skins off for over a month, but I think it was worth it.

Considering that my wife insists on not openeing her door all the way, and draging the toe of her shoe across the bottom of the door...they are holding up really good. Nothing has scracthed of, no paint is peeling and any scuffs wipe off....thank god!

Can't wait for spring to do more crap to the interior...and BTW, thanks for asking!

doors look really good! i painted mine in my old car, but after a while i had small scratches in some spots, but i didn't prep it as well as u did, so it should be good. for the most part mine stayed ok, just some spots. good work!

yeah nice job, i dont know if I would of had the patience or time to do something like that. Be nice if I did though. Keep us posted on the stage 2 operation dashboard project.

I think the dash is stage3...uh thats gonna be soo much work!

Stage2 will be the upper half of the car. I did the interior A pillars in black and I think they turned out amazing, so Im gonna do all the pillars and the roof liner in black.

What kinda of paint did you all use for this??I want all of my interior to have a very glossy finish to it when its done.

any interoir/exterior paint...jut sead the back and make sure its good for plastic. I wanted to use the Krylon Fusion stuff, but the colour is LTD.

The key is sanding the surface down smooth, then a couple good primer coats, light sand, and a bunch of good finish coats, light sand in between, then wet sand w/ super fine paper the last coat.

Super smooth, durable, glossy!

You wouldnt need any kinds of gloss to spray over the paint?

No, it isn't needed. If you put a bunch of layers of top coat colour down, you can use finish-grit wet sand on the final coat and it will smooth out and get a glossy finish. (depending our the colour/finish you choose)

Also with all the coats, and a good primer base, you don't have to worry about it scratching or peeling off.

I work at a body shop, and I know you've heard it all before, but taking your time with the prep is essential to making it last... This is not something to be done overnight, or even on a weekend. It's gonna take a few weeks of your spare time to get it right.

OK, here you go.

Surface to be painted must be clean and roughly sanded to get the surface ready for paint. The surface needs to be a bit rough not completely smooth for the paint to stick.

Do a couple coats of primer, let dry till tacky between coats, don't rush. Do many many light coats. Thick coats will glob in area and take longer to dry in between coats. Light spray to cover the area, let dry, repeat. Build up the layers.

Do a few coats of your finish colour. For the doors I thing I did 3 or 4 coats.

The final coat was let dry over night then I used finish gritt wet sand paper to smooth the finish out.

Maxx is right, I did the rear door panels first, then the front. The rears I didn't notice so much, but driving around for a couple weeks without the front door panels sucked ass!
