I feel your pain... I live in AZ. Drive 40 miles a day and dust storms and the monsoon season is right around the corner. Oh and I drive a black P5. It sucks!

(drinks) We're screwed.

I'm careful not to sneeze near my car, she might get scratched! It's ridiculous... I have so many little scratches from the stupidest stuff!

I have a few pocks/craters in my hood....however i have never noticed any rust or discoloration at the locations....some of them are old too... I am lucky though that i have silver cause u dont notice them. Honestly they might have done a less than perfect job on the paint but at least it doesnt peel off in sheets like my 92 Dodge dakota did..

Yea, the paint is so damn thin. So the mazda keeps mailing the touch-up paint to me(I have three of them right now!!!). I was like wtf?!! Mazda wants that kind of cheap paint to cover P5 owers' mouths or something??!!!!

The paint on my 03.5 silver P5 is el crap--tiny scratches and tiny spots from minor rock hits, some larger dings on front bumper. My wife's 03.5 sandalwood metallic ES has the same problems. We bought both cars last September. Her 2000 626 was a lot better--I think the clear coat was a bit heavier. The metallic mahogany red paint was much nicer, although still thin.

I had the same problem with my MX-3 in bronze metallic. I talked with the dealer--same one we got the 626 and the new cars from--and they said they'd heard it from other owners more than a few times, and would forward my complaint to Mazda. I got a letter from someone at Mazda saying this was considered normal wear and they wouldn't do anything about it. This is the same line some posters have already heard.

Agree with some earlier posts that water-based finishes are the cause of many of the problems. I have a '63 Alfa Spider that was painted in 1973--12 coats of lacquer with three clear coats. Some pits and pocks on the front--we live in Denver and abrasions on paint are common--but the finish otherwise looks terrific after more than 30 years. Very few minor nicks and no scratches. Granted, it's a not a daily driver but there's no comparison in paint jobs between the Alfa and the Mazdas. :(

Yeah I just bought a Yellow Mazda MP3 last month. The car was kept in great condition but there are a few little chips in the paint. Most people that don't know the car think its brand new however looking at some of the chips because i know they are there is kinda getting to me at times.

Clear coat the hood.... i mean how hard could it be to fill in the chips and add a layer of clear coat to prtect it... Its really only the hood anyways.

there's only one solution to this...repaint. Im gonn repaint my front bumper with about three coats of basecoats and about 4 coats of clear, wetsanding between each. When my cf hood comes its gonna get wetsanded and another 3-4 coats of clear. If that thing gets chips in it down to the CF Im screwed, because you cant sand down CF. So its just some preventetive maintenance.

I realize not everyone can paint, and most people dont have the cash to pay someone else to, but its probably the only way. (shrug)

My Yellow '02 P5 has so many chips, I've stopped counting. But, as I've posted before, my paint problem doesn't start there. I started having 2 inch chips of paint coming off here and there about three months ago. The dealer didn't want to do anything about it...or said they could NOT do anything about it. Took it to the "body" department....When they looked at my car, they couldn't believe how much damage there was on it!

It turns out my car (which I bought BRAND NEW) has been repainted in some places. After arguments, many visits, at least 30 to 35 phone calls, etc....they just told me last week they won't pay for it cuz the Mazda Canada guy says I'm the one who had it repainted.....WTF????????????????? :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: (asshole) (ripped)

******' assholes. I haven't even touched my car's paint since I got it. They agreed to ONE of the chips......out of 200!!! (boom05) They're NOT done with me. I'm still in the process of....well...harassing them till something's done about it. I will NOT stop until THEY pay for it! (yes) (bird) (yes) I'm actually calling Mazda Canada directly, today. I'll let you guys know what comes out of this battle as it evolves.

PS. Another thing is that I had 264 KMs on it when I bought it. Hey, they told me it was from test drives only....no problem, right? Wrong! I just found out a few weeks ago that, when I had bought my car, another salesman had accidentally sold it to someone else, so they drove in another car from another dealership...which makes exactly 260 some KMs.....these fuckers aren't done with me!!

Good luck. Ive heard that two ppl in the US got their car's painted under warranty from Mazda, but good luck up there in the Great White North :D

That sounds mad shady on mazda canada's part. However getting a car company to cover paint problems is next to impossible. As i have mentioned i had a white 92 dodge dakota. Around 90k miles the paint started stripping off in SHEETS... varying sizes... right down to the metal. I could slide it right off with my fingers. Apparently this was a known problem and owners were trying to sue chrysler with a class action since it was on multiple vehicles... as far as i know though nothing came of it.
my truck had too many miles to be ever covered by warranty.

I have a classic red 2002 Protege5 (have to check the build date).
I dont really notice them when my car is dirty, but there are countless chips on my hood, my bumper, and even the side of my car. After I wash my car, there are always new chips here and there.
I am not a tailgator, but occasionally find myself a little too close.
I live in Calgary, Canada and theres usually lots of gravel here.

My build date: 07/2001.

I think I may get a CF hood eventually. Also, a new paint job may be an alternative for some of us.(crazy)
Unfortunately, our only other choice is to live with our thin paint.(chair)

I just put a huge vinyl sticker to try and cover up/protect the hood.. for the other chips, I bought the stupid nailpolish s*** mazda sells.. it looks like crap but at least I wont get rusted.

that's what you get, tailgaters (weakest)

just kidding. I have some chips but it's normal for new cars with weak sauce paint jobs.

yeah.. i mean, if you're on the highway, there's bound to be rocks flying on occasion..
my hood looks peppered it's got so many chips.

when i repaint my car, i'm probably going to use colour similar to Ti gray and Sun Silver, but not Mazda's brand.. that's just stupid... something good quality and LOTS of clearcoat. :)

1) Cars with body colored bumpers/grills are going to show paint chips more
2) Cars that are low to the ground are more likely to get hit by rocks
3) There are more SUVs/Trucks on the road than 5-10 years ago
4) People tailgate closer than they used to.

I don't think Mazda has to account for this. The best thing to do is stay away from trucks and SUVs and always leave one car-length per 10mph.
