P5 vs. MSP

Here is my thought, I love the way the MP5 looks. If I had the money and the choice to get either a MSP or an MP5 and ad turbo, I would, without hesitation, get the MP5. Its up to your prefrences.

I agree Cruzin. One thing to take into consideration that we've mentioned several times tonight is that a modified aftermarket turbo system will usualy not be as reliable or powerful as a factory one. There are exceptions to he rule of course, but from what I've heard from turbo P5 owners ehre is that they all run into some hefty problems that really outweigh the cost of just buying a MSP. Honestly if I owned a MSP and wanted to upgrade the power I would lookinto buying a junked head from a 2.0 block and purchase a small Jackson racing supercharger. With some creative fabrication You can have a very solid 6-8psi with no lag and no problems (from what I've seen on other JR products.) Oscar Jackson does some incredible tuning. Maybe you P5 guys and MP3 guys should try to petition them to do some supercharger kits for the 2.0. With this many on the road there's gong to be a large installed base for him to sell to.

take a look at Joe P's factory turbo, factory intercooler car. He''s done all of the tuning on a basically stock MSP and it puts down assloads more power than the spool kit. I think he's running like 21psi last I checked. I'm just going on info I've seen on the boards here. someone running 8psi toasted their tranny last week. Joe's running 21psi on a stock (although factory upgraded) tranny. It's little things like this that I'm reffering to. Also, look at cost again.

I thought so also, but efficency can change with outside air temp so I'm not real sure. I'm building my motor to handle about 19psi. I figure the tranny won't be able to communicate any more power than that to the road. I think max boost on that turbo is 26psi. Again, you'll have to verify all of this with the compressor maps which I believe were posted on here.

hmmm, looks like this thread got moderated. The p5 is actually only about 70 lbs heavier than the regular sedan. I think you should just go for the MSP though, and forget having to go for all the after market stuff. Everybody always lists the turbo kit price, but they aren't taking into account the suspension, which is where it shines. Straight line == the stupid

MSP vs PR5

I'd go for the MSP over the PR5, actually I already did back in January when I bought my MSP! My wife and I checked out both cars, and although the PR5 was a great car, I liked the MSP better. The PR5 handles fine... but it doesn't handle like an MSP. Mazda played with the MSP enough to get the handling right. Sport Compact car said it was faster than a Type R -- that says a lot, considering the Type R has been the raciest FWD car since it came out here in the states (not talking drag strip times here -- sorry, not a drag queen yet!). In addition to a variety of used cars, I also drove a focus SVT, Mini S, and Mustang GT, and liked the MSP the best by far. I like the interior of the MSP, although there is nothing wrong with the PR5. In addition -- the turbo is covered under your warranty -- warranties are good things with turbos (the ghosts of multiple 2nd gen RX-7's still haunt my parents' house...)

There are a couple of minor annoyances with the MSP: namely the radio which breaks, and the windshield which also breaks. I've had great dealer support and had zero problems getting anything fixed, including after my wife ran it into the back of some old lady's lexus. She said she forgot that some people didn't merge with the pedal to the floor:p ! I've been driving old cars for 12 years, so the suspension clunk never really bothered me. And with the ECU fix, I don't have any hesitation (which really annoyed me).

With the MSP you get a great car out of the box (in my opinion) and a much smaller production run, so you are always getting comments from people about the car without doing crazy stuff to it (although I like what a lot of people have done to their P5's!).

Either way you go -- it's a protege, so there are plenty of parts around to fix it after your warranty runs out! Later...

hahaha, if that guy had any money he wouldn't own any car I own! Let's see what he's never going to drive again:
Mustang
Taurus
Civic
Prelude
Protege
Ranger
F-150
Contour SVT
LeBaron
Pinto (yeah, I know)
RX-7

thats about it. I guess he should just give up on owning a ford ever again. I think I've hit just about ever model!
