I would like to gauge interest in the production of a Turbo Kit for the P5.

I am currently in the process of fabricating a custom turbo kit for a P5 and am wondering if there is enough interest to bring this kit into production.

Kit would be a bolt-on and include a Mitsu 16G turbo and front mount intercooler... tentatively be price at approx. $2900.

Feedback please.

I'm interested in putting a turbo on the car but I feel that $2,800 is alittle high for a "base" model turbo setup.

I would like alittle more information about it before I would comit to a $2,800 investment for 6-8 psi turbo.

Also would this unit be a true bolt on or would modification have to be done to the car i.e. internals to be strengthened for the added power, bodywork under the hood to get the piping for the front mounted intercooler in (I have taken apart the front end already and don't see alot of room for piping).

Alittle more info would be much appreciated.

Hey, about time someone in the fam decided to do something about a turbo. The price is a little steep and some more information would be helpful but u know me, if u can get it then i'll put it in. However the only company i trust is AEM/Greddy so i hope ur gonna holla at them :D

I am interested but first like the snomongoose said all those questions have to be answered. Also i would only get it if no major modifications are required under the hood (i want to be able to sell the car sooner or later) and the price of $2800 included proffessional installation. BTW, there are also other sites about the protege5 on yahoo as well as on edmunds.com.
You might want to post there too.

I guess if that price included installation it would be a really good deal. I think a 16g would be a little overkill, but it would leave for a lot of improvement for the block and head. The cool thing is if this kit is produced you could go with a standard mitsu 14b(same turbine housing as 16g) compressor wheel for quicker spool up (and can handle far more than 7-8 psi still as well.) Front Mount Intercoolers go for about $1000 brand new and a brand new 16g is about $800 (more for ported or clipped). One could pick up an excellent used 16g for $400 or even a used 14b turbo for $100-200. As you can see there is great benefit to the kit being developed so you can use all the bits and pieces to a greater and more cost effective advantage.

Anyhow, enough....Turbos for us all!!!!

Guys,

There are currently 2 or more kits in the works for the protege:

Tripoint Engineering
Bell Engineering

Check over on http://protegemp3.com
in the performance section.

Sure.. why not.... Once I get a job with an income that is more than 30$ more than my car payments.....

Sure but it has to have an ECU reprogram, BOV, intercooler etc etc etc. A quality kit that is bolt on with good instructions. :D

I would be very interested in a bolt on turbo kit. but like everyone else i would like some more information.

Keep talking. It sounds good so I'll keep waiting. Turbo would be an excellent addition, like everyone else I need more info.

i guess i will put my 2 cents in also........yeah if you can get us more info as to what all is included if the directions are made simple enough for a 16 year old girl to follow then i am down especially if the price is right..........also maybe some test results on how well the turbo does just to make things better..

They are not working on any turbo, its just bulls***. Its been a month since the original message and no additional info of any kind. So if they do make a turbo you can expect it to be just as quality made as their (nonexistent) responses are in a timely manner.

Hell yeah that would be Nice!

Just as long as it is all bolt on. No modifications at all. How bout the internals as for strengthening it so it doesn't blow up when your running the p5 hard.

I would like to TWIN turbo my MP5...that is, if i could find the space under that packed hood... :)

Of course a turbo would be great. But like everyone is saying:
1. Are the internals strong enough?
2. How much power are we talking?
3. Could we go TWIN?!!!?
4. Could the average Joe install it?
5. Is the founder of this thread ever going to return a reply?

First of all, everything I've read concerning that "turbo" P5 in the ProtegeTech gallery indicates that it is a show car - the turbo is non-functioning. I've even read that the car was PUSHED into position at that show.

That doesn't mean it is all bulls***, though. I've also read that the stock internals would be plenty strong for mild to moderate boost - even up and above 200 HP (Mitch from Protege5online.com was talking about a possible kit that'll get us close to 230HP - he's not known for talking trash, IMO).

Twin might be pushing it - this is a little four-cylinder motor, you know. Maybe it could be done, but the cost would probably be ridiculous. Everyone seems to cringe a little at spending $3k for a turbo - just imagine what a double set-up would cost. No one will develop it if no one buys it.

I agree that turbo is a nice idea, but everyone seems to think it should cost $500 or something. These things are expensive to research and produce. Ever see what Oscar Jackson charges for Miata superchargers? Once you buy the S/C and the extras (timing unit, knock sensor, intercooler) you're in the $4000 - $4500 range. And I've even read that the fitment isn't 100%!

I understand the desire for more power, but we all knew that we were only getting 130 ponies when we left the dealership (grinning WIDE, I might add). I, personally, wouldn't even consider such modifications until I am no longer under warranty. All I need is to have a great looking, useless vehicle with a blown motor and 4 years worth of payments left. These are serious bolt-on toys - they can screw your motor up if they are not up-to-par. I'll be waiting it all out - let 2 or three companies come out with T/Cs and/or S/Cs, and see some real-world statistics, as well as the facts about how long they'll last. And by then, the factory turbo P5 just might be here, and then I can zoom-zoom with full confidence and a warranty.

I'm in full agreement with you hihoslva! Couldn't have said it better myself. Plus, if we wanted and in some cases could afford a 300hp Camaro that will pass anything on the road except a gas station, we would have bought one, and ran low 13's out of the box. Enjoy the car for what it is, IMO, have fun, drive it hard if you want, and when you are closer to paying it off, then mod it. By that time, they will have ridiculous parts that are tried and true.

hum good point i guess thats why they have the phrase "patience is a virture.....and will bring much better things" :D

Well, those are all good points. But there is a market for the turbos no matter how new our cars are. Its and individual choice, and its also my choice. If a turbo does not come out soon (giving it a year) I might trade for a W R X
