P5 top speed

you can say whatever you want to say but physics is a sure thing.....don't start going off about real world application because that is EXACTLY what physics is....
i don't buy for a second that a stock P5 can be doing 130. i just got back from a road trip and hit 112 and i was pushing it for about a mile it may of had another 2-4 mph but it would have taken a couple miles to wring it out.....yeah i know that utah is high elevation and all but i doubt you are going to be able to hit 130 just with an elevation change...
as a couple people said: speedo's aren't accurate at high speeds. if you are going to make a top speed video you better be breaking out a stalker radar gun...then i might believe all of this crap.
umm dont forget to take a pic of the outside of the car i would like to know what diameter rims are on that too;)
soory just had to post that.

like i posted several times i got it to 120 . it took FOREVER. when i mean forever i mean i had it pinned COMPLETELY for about 2 minutes. it had trouble getting there and became a little unstable. so i would really like to see on video(not in person:eek: )
this car or any stock protege without any defect to the speedo , do this mph

Eh? 125 at the wheels stock for a NA Protege motor is rather hard to believe. Even more so when others are dynoing with mods and barely getting 110-115 at the wheels. Sure they weren't mentioning the flywheel hp?

Hey ProtegePoe where at in Virginia do you live??

are you ******* serious? They gave me a print out of the exact specs on the car when I bought it. Don't give me any s*** about it. And by the way, I wouldn't have to have 150 at the crank..You don't always lose that much power in the transfer. Moreover, the spec sheet also could of mean't at the crank. I don't remember me saying it was at the wheels, so you can officially kiss my ass. I don't see why this is such a big deal, I've had my car 125-130 several times, why is this such a problem. Go take a trip to newton, CT on I-84, thats enough road to hit it..Hell, I did it tonight coming back from trumbull..So eat it..

Linux did the FS-ZE motor swap some time back. He actually spoke with my brother Jeremy who did the Sport20 conversion complete with the FS-ZE motor over three years ago. My brother Jeremy actually had the first street (non-racing aplication) FS-ZE swap in the country. So believe me when I say I know about these cars.

The FS-ZE is hardly the stock N/A 2.0L. We also have another friend (by the name of Jeremy) that did the FS-ZE swap and dynoed at 130WHP and 130+Lb/Ft. That is versus 100-108 from some of the dyno runs I've seen posted elsewhere on the site for the P5. ES ,DX, and LXs will all be in the same range.

To my knowledge, Linux is going to be goin turbo, so if the power is right, he'll be gear limited. I'm glad that this post has stirred some attention. I just find it hard to dispute math, physics, and some of the controlled top speed testing done by various publications. I love the Protege lineup, but am gonna question anything that seems BS. We don't need the whole forum
sounding like a kill in someones BS racing stories.

Dude just because you can't attain 120+++mph in your P5 or Protege, don't hate on people who can acheive what has been done. I know Linux did this stock in his MP3 and and so has Smp3000. If it takes awhile for the MP3 or P5 to get to that certain speed, it mean's it don't have the ball* to get there or the power, elevation, stretch of the road to be attainable. If linux or smp3000 got to 140+mph then there is no reason why the MP3 won't get there either. ok linux and smp3000 are both turbo'd, that doesn't change the Topspeed of the car or neither does N20. For instance if you add Turbo or N20, it will get to the topspeed faster than what the car can do stock, but it does't change the Topspeed. It doesn't mean now they all can go 150+mph just because there F/I and N20.

SpicyMchaggis-Don't take it personally we weren't "bitching" to you just not seeing how the engine could produce that at wheel.

tritonheat1-Yes having more useable hp will allow for a higher top speed. Not just on how quickly you get there but also on attainable speed. Remember two main concepts effect top speed; drag and power (revs, grearing etc).
For the most part the car is not limited by drag it shares a extremely low ratio with a lot of cars.
But we do not have the usable power band to achieve high speeds. Now if people are getting 120-30 great then.
But a FI car will have a higher top end than a normal protege with less power. Course it will take a lot more power to actually achieve any noticeable results.

Top Speed Night

I was driving with my P5, my brother with his Golf , and a friend with his IS300.

IS300 - 150
P5 - 130
Golf - 120

I could hit 135, but nah....... we were driving fast for a long time!

95 South (Miami Downtown) - 826 (Palmetto) - 75 North - Arivda Parkway Exit. 7 ..........15 minutes!!!
If anyone is from around this area U KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!...... we drive in the mornings during weekend....

Peace,

(laserp5)
P5 - Noiz

a stock P5 can do atleast 120mph
I have been in the car while my friend drove, the speedo said 120

also my 106 crank HP GEO prizm with an auto trany can do 116mph
I know this because I passed a guy in a camero and he decided to follow me

I'm in love with this thread.

I did 150mph in my P5!
I was drafting a 18 wheeler down Mt Fuji with a 70mph tail-wind, and I f-ing Pegged it! :D

Tritonheat1 ------ Drag limited means that the P5 does not have enough motor to overcome drag at approx 118MPH. Acceleration aside, If you put more power on a "drag limited" and not "gear limited" car, you will increase it's top speed.

The MSP has the exact same transmission as the P5. So how do you account for it's higher top speed than the P5? The top speed fairy? That's right, it makes more power to overcome aerodynamic drag. And it attains enough of a top speed that Mazda had to cut the fun at 130MPH to keep "The Man" (not Edwin) happy.

And SpicyMcHaggis, anytime you do a dyno run, the figure they qoute is at the wheels. 15% drivetrain loss is an average loss. So lets do the math. 150*.15 =22.5hp lost in the drivetrain. So 150-22.5= right in the middle of your qouted HP/Torque figures.

Look, I do not think anyone is hating here. Just trying to keep things real. I'm sure you guys are pretty cool and this is definitely nothing personal...but I can tell a few of you are getting bitter ;) and uncertain why? Just tryin to get everyone thinkin about what gets posted in these boards sometimes and to use a little common sense.

In the meantime, I think I'll get in my F-15 and do a couple pulls on some supra guys I know down the road while I await a flaming response.

hehe common sense??? Nah most of us left that at the protegeclub board. :D

btw where at in VA do you live? We got a couple of meets being setup wondering if you would be interested etc..

Alexandria --- near the Springfield metro. You're only about 20 minutes away. My brother Jeremy and I routinely hit up the meets in the area, and I'm at MIR every weekend it's not raining. Let me know when you have something comin up. At 130+, I can be in woodbridge in 10 minutes!

LOL 130..why not shot for 150 there is nothing holding it back. :p

*warning thread hijack in process*
We actually have a meet coming up on June 21st at the All Sport GP Go-kart track in Dulles. I'll shoot a PM later with the details soon as I update the list and see how many more people we need.
Quick sum of it is $60 for about 5 quick lap races with a ladder system based on who is fastest. Should take about 1 1/2-2 hours and we need atleast 12 people to make reservations. There will be two small prices for 1st and 2nd place winners.

edit:blah typos I'm not awake yet lol. I gotta to get up to MIR sometime soon just try and get a mid 16 out of the ole p5. Actually want to go to Summit Raceway but they are booked solid for awhile :(

eh whatever..i know what my car can do..130 is totally possible..I don't about P5's or whatever..put its not that big of a deal. but then again, my car isn't exactly stock so this arguement kinda ends there..

an 18 wheeler doing 150??? i find that a bit hard to believe, even if it is downhill with a tail-wind. those things couldn't handle and aren't designed for anywhere near those speeds. now you alone, downhill, with the tailwind, i could probably believe that, but not the truck

It was the strangest thing, I was on my top-speed test and when I hit 85 MPH I travelled back in time and crashed into a barn. Then these people thought I was an alien.....where is doc when you need him.....(wiggle)

Something must have gone wrong...the flux capacitor isn't supposed to go off until 88 MPH.

Yeah, I know. My head is filled with worthless crap.

top speed

Ive had my automatic 2003 protege 5 up to about 110 115... an trucks are capable of doing 120 so I wouldnt doubt 150 I also work at a truckin company
