2002 Mazda Protege 5
Hey there everyone,
I've been reading and reading a lot of posts and can't find anything with my exact problem (my apologies if there actually is a post out there). Hopefully someone can help!

I bought a 2002 Protege 5 (automatic) a couple months ago and it has been excellent, and still is, apart from this: When I go to start the car, there is a lot of cranking and noise like the engine is trying to start, but the battery might be dying. Sometimes it starts after a lot of effort, sometimes not, and I'll wait and turn the key again and it will start. BUT if I get in the car, and turn the key (without starting), and wait 5 seconds, and THEN turn the key fully to start the engine, it starts every time, no problem. And otherwise the car is running perfectly fine. We put a new battery in it (and cleaned the connections). A new starter was put in the car last year. I don't have the service records with me right now, but I think new spark plugs were recently put in (but I will be checking those too).

Any thoughts/ideas? For the past couple weeks I've just been turning the key and waiting until I start the engine, but I'd like to get to the bottom of this problem.

Thanks
