p5 Sport Mode Auto

Does anyone know if the new auto on the p5 is any stronger than the 2002. I have intentions of installing a CAI or Ram, exhaust and headers, etc. Future plans may even include a turbo.

i'll go with first my first thought...no! mazda isn't known for making very strong trannies. i don't think they have upgraded them for the proteges. if the msp's don't get new ones, they aren't gonna upgrade an auto...

all the mods you listed aren't gonna add much hp either(except for the turbo) so the tranny can handle it. i wouldn't spend the money on a CAI, exhaust or hearder if you plan to get a turbo at any time. just save for the turbo b/c those parts are gonna be useless with the turbo. you'll even have to get larger diameter piping for the exhaust too.

i think you should decide whether to go NA or FI before you start buying parts b/c you'll save a lot of money.

i'm sure the tranny can handle a turbo running lower boost. i don't think you'll be able to hold .5 bar though... unless you get a custom TQconvertor made...

Yes, before you start spending money on your engine decide if you want to go NA or FI. As for the exhaust, if you go with a full cat-back with the increased width piping, this is one upgrade that you can do for both. I have both the Injen CAI and a Racing Beat exhaust, if I go turbo (still possible, thinking it over, saving money) I'll be able to keep my racing beat exhaust as it is adequate for a turbo installation.

If you think you may want to turbo in the future and still want an intake and you don't live in California you can go with something cheaper then an Injen for the time being AEM short ram from http://www.adventon.com or one of the Ractive or similar style intakes from ebay. There are several guys on this board who have put on Ebay intakes and been very satisfied with them. Unfortunately I needed to get something that was CARB certified so that pretty much limited my choices to Injen and AEM. I wasn't thinking about turbo at the time that I bought the Injen so I went for it, but aside from my Intake and exhaust I am holding off on engine mods for the time being, aside from new plugs or perhaps the ground wire kit that has been discussed on this board.

As for the Sport Auto Tranny, it's what I have and It's okay. Yes Mazda doesn't have the greatest repuatation for tranny's but 7,000 miles and a little over 3 months after getting my car it's still treating me well. The only thing that worries me about turbo is it pretty blows the factory warranty to bits and I don't want to pay for a new auto tranny :( As I understand it, the taller gearings on the auto tranny can be good for a turbo application and you may want to put in a torque convertor as mx3ownzj00 stated. There is one available for our car that runs $400. If I did turbo my car and blow my tranny I guess I would take that and use it as an excuse to put in a manual with a LSD :D (assuming that's available at the time) and the cost wouldn't be too much more then raplacing the auto tranny, who knows maybe it could be cheaper if I had a mechanic friend help me out with it.

Enjoy your new car :D

The automatic trannies are the Protege are fine...The manual tranneis in the Protege are fine.

There ar eno reliabilty issues with neither of them...

Thanks, I don't think the trannies are bad StuttersC, it just that its not build like the 4speed manual in my truck. I can put 800hp into that tranny and not be to worried about it. The tranny in the Protege is a little different though.

Thanks though, I will consider were I realy want to go with a FI or NA. I would relay consider going with FI if they come out with a supercharger for our car.

yes, if you have a tranny that doesn't have any extra hp to mess with its fine and it will last forever. but they are fragile and this has been proven more times than i can count. granted you'll have to be making about 100hp more than stock to the crank, but i expect the auto's TQconvertors are gonna have problems with a tad less than 100hp extra.

You call a tranny that handles 240 whp on a regualr basis fragile?? For crying out loud, how mcuh should a STOCK tranny take before it starts to break?!?

The Protege tranny isn't fragile...Abuse will break ANY tranny faster than anything, that is where the misconception of being fragile is coming from.

The SPEED World Challenge cars...

Gear ratios are different for 3, 4, 5 and the final drive, clutch is different. As we all know people seem to break the shifter fork going into third gear, which to my knowledge is stock in the SWC car.

So, once again the tranny is essentially stock and is spun like crazy and stands up to racing in the SWC.

one of our members in the toronto protege club has an auto with a custom turbo kit. it runs fine..... no reliability issue here. just make sure you change the tranny fluid to something better like Redline fluid.
