P5 HID retrofit project completed

Roughly about 2-3x the size of the original hole, just enough so that the projector bulb holder (when aimed) stuck out about 1.5" or so.

You should get wheels so you can sell me your Racing Harts!!(2thumbs)

I started poking my noise around on the Retrofit Source's website

I'm really torn between making my own or getting wheels, **** me. lol. Matt! Why couldn't of you just let me keep on dreaming on $1000 headlights instead of showing me they can be self made for a third of the price?!?!?

So if I was to do this retrofit and get a D2S HID kit as well, would I also need the D2S adapter you bought?

I believe so because the plug and play kits just adapt to what your factory bulb is (however I'll have some adapters for sale soon).

Do you feel it is worth getting high/low bi-xenon? I would probably be happy with just low HID, what projector would you recommend?

Nice, did you just keep the stock high beams? or did you use something else? im sorry its late and i read it but dont remember what you used. BTW sick ass job.

so the high beam doesn't need warmup time?

Nope, no warmup time is needed since the low beam/high beam is used with a shared bulb. The only thing the "high beam" is, is the cutoff shield in the projector flipping down, so that the projector is wide open. This is done by wiring the solenoid wires from the projector directly to the factory high beam connection. When you activate the high beam the solenoid activates and flips the cutoff shield down. Here is a picture to explain:

Granted the dimensions might not be exactly right but this should give you an idea.

The factory high beams aren't functional, no need really due to the bi-xenon projector. I was thinking of getting the factory fog light harness and powering the factory high beams on the harness and have the ability to turn them on with the fog switch but it's probably not worth the trouble. Thanks for your comments.

I take it you used a H7 DDM kit not H4 right? I like your idea, but I wondering since you get get regular protege lights cheap if that would be a better application for a single projector. Also which wire activates the high beam on the high beam wiring harness. I think you did not only a awesome and slick install, but you did it for a reasonable price.

1 - No, projectors use D2S bulbs so it's completely different.

2 - And you could put them in the Protege sedan lights also, which would be better but I have grown to like the way the P5 lights look.

3 - There are two wires that come from the bottom of the projector that are connected to the solenoid, I spliced them up to a male 9005 connector and connected it directly to the factory high beam plug, looks factory and performs as such.

Right, what I meant for hook-up in the question is how the stock light harness hooks to your ballast, did you get a H7 DDM kit (which adapts to the stock harness)? I saw in the earlier post how you used an adapter for the proper HID blubs to the ballast and was unsure from ballast to wire harness.

So you wired up an adapter from the projector to the stock high beam harness, where did you get the parts for the high adapter and what all did you need?

Do you know of a larger projector that would work with the standard protege headlight? Or is the size limited by the GTI shroud?

im using a mazda 3 projector, just requires more modification.

After review I think I will stick with stock p5 headlights. I do not want to spend $100+ on headlights.

lol, how much did you think projectors were? $30?

Edit: unless you meant buying sedan lights to retrofit rather than using your current ones, then nvm. (lol2)

why do you want a larger projector? bigger is not always better.
