Hello people indigospeed is offering a flywheel for P5 did anyone get it i wonder if it really increases the power significantly as they claim 10-30 HP.I wonder how much it would cost to install it as I have absolutley no idea as to how to install a flywheel myself ;)

In think since its pretty much part of the clutch assembly you might be able to change it without pulling the whole motor. I have never installed a flywheel with the motor in the car since the engines i have built were out of the car and blueprinted piece by piece. Check with your local parts place or something they might have a better idea

Why dont one of u experts explain how the fly wheel works. I mean 10-30hp is great and i want it but tell me what it does...Thankx! :D

I'm not sure exactly but the stock Flywheels in a car are generally very heavy, Generally whenever you have any rotating mass than it requires force to spin it. When the rotating mass is lighter it requires much less force which is the idea behind an aftermarket flywheel because they are usually half the weight or so of the stock flywheel.

Damn Thom is coming out with some good answers.

I would have put the analogy to swing weight.

You are totally correct that most factory flywheel's are "heavy". The lighter the flywheel the less work the motor has to do to drive this weight. I actually talked to a friend about doing this, and he stated that you could loose some torque doing this.

I can't explain that, maybe someone else on the site can do that.

Oh, forgot to answer about install of the flywheel. You would have to remove trans from the vehicle to do this. Being that the trans and clutch mount to the flywheel.

Well changing out the Flywheel is always a win/lose situation. You definitely won't lose much on a dyno but the best benefits are MUCH better acceleration. It's going to feel like you can tear first and second gears out of your transmission. You should lose some top end grunt when replacing the flywheel with a lighter unit, but hey who cares about that...I don't need anymore speeding tickets. Acceleration is where it's at.

I'm trying to figure out how a lighter flywheel can lose top end? It doesn't change the gearing. My common sense tells me this: The flywheel is mass that the engine must spin, and is one of the contributors to the loss between crank HP numbers and wheel HP. Wouldn't a lighter flywheel simply increase the efficiency of the drivetrain and increase the wheel HP numbers? I'm sure there's about 100 things I'm not considering here.
