P5 Audio Question(s)

I was checking out a few of the mazda accessory sites, and found that the kenwood (eXcelon) speakers that are "replacement upgrades" over the stock P5 speakers come in 6x9" for the rear.
From what I heard on here, the rear speakers were 6.5"? The sites said that they directly replace the rear speakers....
Would they be correct in saying that the 6x9s will replace the 6.5s without cutting?

Also, I want to replace the head unit, but I like the fact that the CD changer is right there in the dash. They termed this "modular"- which appeared to be like a musical equipment rack, where the head unit splits apart into the different sections.
Does anyone know if you can use *just* the 6 CD changer (from the stock HU) and pair it with an aftermarket HU? If yes, which one(s) will let you do that?

Thanks!

The Excelon replacments are for the sedan, they will not fit the P5 w/o cutting.

You will not be able to keep the 6-disc changer with an aftermarket HU. You could do a search for SirNuke's setup, running amps and sub(s) with the stock head unit. From what I've heard it sounds really good like that.

Hope that answers your questions. :D

I just might try that.

Theft is a huge problem in this area, and to me, taking the faceplate off of a HU every time is a pain in the arse.

I most likely will end up cutting anyway, as I want to mount the subs, to keep the hatch space available.

Thanks for you help

Are you planning on mounting Subs in the rear doors? Because if you do that you will have to have the air volume right for it to sound good. You would be better off going with a small enclosure. Unless you are mistaken in thinking 6x9's are subs.

Personally I would go with an aftermarket HU even if it is a pain. More features, MP3 playback, more EQ settings.

I haven't looked into mounting them in the car yet, but I figured 10's above the wheelwells...

I haven't seen subs mounted in the doors

I've always had 6x9s in the rear, and 6.5s in the front....this setup seems small to me. But, on the other hand, I've always gone with 2 way speakers and no subs.

Would you leave the speaker sizes alone, or start cuttin' ?

I'd leave them alone and just get a sub or two. But that's just me. I'd hate to do anything irreversible to my car. But it's really up to you.

The rear speakers in the P5 are 6.5" and the front are 5''x7". I up graded my HU and speakers and they sound great even without the subs. if u want to save room but still wantthe sound of the subs, change your front speakers to 6.5" component speakers. These sound great.

This will in now way replace the sound subwqoofers get you. It will indeed sound much better but will not be anywhere as deep as subs.

OKAY...lets get something straight first....the STOCK REAR SPEAKERS IN THE P5 ARE NOT 6 1/2's......they are in fact 6's....

a 6 1/2 will fit in there very nicely though.....

another thing....even with them amped....the rear speakers in a P5 are virturally useless.....the ONLY thing they are good for is allowing any rear seat passangers get some better sound....you can't even really hear them in the front...

as for the sub....GET ONE!!! a TEN is a real nice addition....and if you look....JL Audio has a Sub that comes in a box called a POWERWEDGE....it fits very snuggly up aginst the back of the seats and fires rearward...and takes up VERY LITTLE space....I don't believe I have sacrificed any hauling capacity at all with my P5.....the only time it might get in the way was if you wanted to haul something big enough that you had to lay the seats down for....then its simple enough to just unhook the wires and tape them up till you put it back in after the trip.

BTW....I did keep my stock 6 disc changer.....added a 5 channel amp that has speaker level inputs...(ampine Vpower amp) that has 40 watts rms X 4 to the doors...and 125 watts rms to the sub....it does sound good.....

Sir Nuke. I am about to install the same on my Vivid Yellow PR5: Alpine V-amp + JLAudio 10W Powerwedge).

Did you keep the stock front/rear speakers then?

Did you place the amp under the driver seat? How did you secure it?

I will attempt to perform the installation of the amp/sub along with an Audiovox RF-in for my Nomad Jukebox3 MP3 player.

Any installation tips? Can I utilize the HOW-TO from the Crutchfield site?

A JL sub is what I wanted to do

I had heard about your rig...keeping the stock HU (which is nice for me, because stock HU's are not high demand on the black market :) )

The problem for me starts with the placement of the subs. I do and will continue to fully utilize the fold down seats. A buddy and I go biking every weekend, usually regardless of weather, in which case it would be a royal pain in the ass to mount the bikes on the roof- in the rain (on the rack that I dont have yet!)

So, to complicate the matter I wanted cut a hole for a 10, or two in the back- somehwhere.

And yes, I feel the pr5's speaker sizes are s***, I don't know why they would configure it the way they did

heres the deal, unless you want cut off your right arm and hand it to an installer for a custom sub installation (above the wheel well),youre going to have to get a regular box and just put it in the trunk (no bikes allowed). i have a 12" jl w3v2 in a box and it takes up some space, but not as much as you might think. it goes from the right side of the hatch to about 1.5" past the 40/60 seat split. so it takes up roughly 40% of the hatch. i have my 5 channel alpine v series amp mounted on the back of the seat. it has 50x4 watts plus 200w to the sub and sounds very good. i didnt do anything to my car that cannot be reversed and i would suggest that you did not either. unless you plan on having your car until it completely craps out. you can get great sounding speakers that fit perfectly so that you dont have to cut anything. :)

Yeah,
I checked with the goofs at tweeter, and they said it'd be about $1700 just to cut me a hole and glass up the back.

I'll have to debate whether its worth the extra trouble for some bass, or just be happy with upgraded speakers

....Does the dash have to be taken off and the head unit messed with to install the amp, or do you just connect it with the wires to the speakers?

NO, I did NOT keep the stock speakers in the doors...I upgraded.

YES I put the amp under the drivers seat...and I secured it with VELCRO! got it at wal-mart.....2 1/2 inch wide with adhesive backing....put the hook side on the bottom of the amp and stuck ti to the floor.

Not sure about the HOW-TO on the cruchdield site.....my advice..
