P5 Alternate Tire Sizes

2002 P5
Hello All,
I am wondering what alternative to the 195 series tire I can run. Any reason why a 205/60/16 wouldn't be just fine? My car is literally a commuter and thats about it. I am looking for life, price, quiet, smoother ride quality, and warranty- performance on a skid pad isn't a priority.

Thanks,
Matt

search the forums, there are already many threads about this. I have 205/50/16

I hate the p5 tire size. 205-50-16 has lots of choices, but you'll be slower off the line and odometer will be off.

Just got a new set of tires last week and I went with 205/50/16. It rides a lot smoother and soaks up bumps better. With the 205/50/16 when the speedometer reads 60mph, actual speed will be 61mph: 1.7% faster.

Same problem when I had my stock 195..Suck...will mess up the ride and feel all the bumps...If you worried about bumps try getting 205/55/16 you will notice the big difference...definitely not 60 series it will rub. If your speedometer reads: 65 You're going approximately: 68.3 bigger circumference and diameter.

i've been runnin 205-55-16 on my 02 mp5 for the last few years.the 195-50-16 are too damn expensive and only a few options.i get great mpg and speedo is only a tad off.daily driver ct to nyc bout 97 mi each way.my car has jst over 278,000 mi on it and as long as i rotate tires reg i get great tire wear.kumo n dunlops both suck.just mk sure u get a decent 60-80,000 mi tire.hope it helps

I just purchased 205/50/16 Dunlop Fierce Invicta VR tires for my P5 as my Kumhos were worn and I found a bulge in one of the sidewalls.

I need a decent "all-season" tire here in Michigan. I didn't want to spend mucho $$$ as I may not have the car next year anyway. (Going in a different direction for my DD :))

I found these Dunlops at Belle tire for $334.00 and then I had another $60.00 for mounting/balancing. The car rides much better with more sidewall and the tires are excellent in the rain. Snow will be the big test so I'll repost after we actually get some. As a bonus, my speedo is dead nuts on now as verified with my Garmin. The 195/50s were 23.7 dia. and the new ones are 24.1 so it worked out great.

The tires have a rim protector for those of you with nice wheels.

Check 'em out if you're in the market for tires.

Not many decent all season tires IMO for winter. Protege's in general tend to be sucky in the winter time. Trust me, I've got 2, my mom has a P5 and I have quite a few friends who have em too. If you really want to be ok in the winter, you should get snow tires. However due to cost I've just fought with my all seasons for the past 8-9 years lol.

Does anyone know if you can run 225/50/16? There's a cheap set on craigslist. Also 215/65/16.

Not true on my end we had one of the worst winters I remember here in va and mine did pretty good in the snow with street tires. But I also have 17s not sure how much of a differnce itl make. But even starting out goin up hill I didn't have a problem just don't act like u have 1st gear and use 2nd

^...and 215/40/16.

225 is too wide for the P5's 6.5 inch rims. 215 is technically too wide, but they'll fit. 215/65 is going to be a REALLY TALL sidewall...I don't know if it will fit, and your speedo is going to be WAY OFF. I wouldn't recommend it.

205/50/16
205/45/16
205/55/16

what about to fit a 17x7 wheel on a sedan? i'm currently running 205/40/17s and was toying with the idea of going 205/45/17 in order to fill up my wheel wells a bit. would i also be able to stretch a 215/40/17 or 215/45/17 without rubbing? my fenders aren't rolled. HELP!!!

Depends on your offset. 215/40/17 is the closest to OEM tire size and will not be stretched at all on a 7" wheel. I ran that size on my MSP wheels (17x7 +55) and my current Volk GT-P's (17x7 +44) with 2 degrees of negative camber. Fenders are rolled in the rear and I only rub on the inner fender in the rear with 2-3 people in the car. If you are stock height, you should be fine, again depending on offset.

thanks, circuit! i'm on a set of 2005 mazdaspeed miata wheels with a +40 offset, if i remember correctly. would running 215s in either 40 or 45 series cause me to rub on unrolled fenders?
