Overseas Mazda Question... 1.5L 323

:
2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protege
well the title pretty much say it. I am curious as i see a lot of Mazda 323's here which are identical in looks to protege's in the states. The problem is that the engine specs defnintely say its a 1.5L, not 1.6. Is this the same motor, just smaller displacement or is it completely different??? I'm curious as to the difference here and was hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

reason being, the better half wants a cheap car here, but if the engine specs are not the same, then i pretty much know nothing about it...

Thanks in advance,
Paul

What year is the car? I'm assuming 3rd gens. The 1.5 is completely different from any other engine that was used in the 3rd gens. The 1.5L (Z5) was used only in the 95-98 Protege DX and LX trim, stateside.

The third gen Proteges have had 3 engines since 98. The 1.6L (ZM-DE), 1.8L (FP-DE), and the current 2.0 (FS-DE).

its a 2001, but all of the 323's have this motor here... Does anyone have specs on this engine or does it share similar characteristics to the 1.6?

I just want some more info b/c a fully loaded 2001 323 costs about US$2000 over here, just because of the release of the Mazda 3 and 6's here.

The models there may have more power. There is a J-spec version of this engine ZL-VE that has variable valve timing and puts out about 130HP. http://www.corksport.com/content/00/01/06/61/73/shop/products/images/1386721.jpg
