Other OEM shift knob options

Just wondering if there is any way to tell if I could use an OEM shift knob from another make w/o physcially trying it. I have seen some that I like. The one from a Mercury Cougar for instance. I guess what I am trying to ask are most shifter threads universal, or does every manufacturer probably use different threading.

There's a s-itload of different thread pitches. I don't know which other car has it, but our Protege(manual)T.P. is 10mm x 1.25.
