Ordered 2007 3s Touring

I just ordered a 3s Touring from the Mazda shop in my home town in Ohio. I am still in Bangkok, but will be moving to Virginia in December. I did the deal through the internet and just placed a deposit over the phone. It will be Aurora Blue, with moonroof/6cd, and black cloth interior. Since my family has bought several cars from the dealer, and my brother is personal friends with him, I will be getting the car for $100 over invoice. I haven't seen any information on invoice for that car yet, so I cannot confirm, but I have no reason to believe it is not as he says.

After having himmed and hawed over what car to buy for the last six years, I am very exited of now seeing the goal. Especially so after thinking the Honda Fit was the car to buy for about the last 8 months. My out-the-door cost for the 3 will be around $20.4k, which isn't that much more than the Fit, and I will be getting so much more for the money. Although I did slightly bust my personal maximum of $20k, it wasn't by much.

The only unanswered question is whether to title it in Ohio, using my parent's address as my home of record, or title it in VA (where I am yet to obtain a domicile). I think sales tax rates and my credit union might be the determining factors there.

Also something that should make me very popular in this forum is that I didn't order an MS3, so there will be one more of those available to all you who are waiting! After loving life for the last six years in Bangkok, I now can't wait to get back and get into my new 3.

Congrats on the new car....... er..... order!

Where in VA are you moving to? If you're worried about having to pay tax twice then you might be okay. I was living in VA when I bought my 3, but purchased it in Maryland. A month after that I moved to NC. Since I was a resident in VA I payed VA sales tax (which is like 3%), but since I moved to NC less than 90 days after that I didn't have to pay a tax on the car when it was registered.

Just look up the tax laws and that should answer your questions. Actually the finance people at the dealer should be able to give you an answer as well.

I plan on looking up the tax laws. Right now, I believe I have two options. If I title it in Ohio, and use my parents' address, I will pay the local 6.75% sales tax. I will then by driving around VA with Ohio plates. Which isn't that big of a deal considering all the Ohio plates that are there with military personnel in that area. If I do that, then all the car info will be tied to my aging parents. I am not sure if I want that. Option 2 is that I tell the dealer I am going to title it in VA. The dealer will not charge me the Ohio sales tax and give me a temp tag. I will then have to go to the VDOT to register it, and pay the sales tax there. The problem there is that I might still not have a permanent place to live, since I am getting the car immediately. Temp tags are only 30 days, I think, and escrow is usually at least 45. I might just have to register it using my work address.

I just got this off the VA DMV website (previous post referred to DOT, sorry for the acronymangulation):

Pay the following fees

* $10 titling fee
* the 3% motor vehicle sales and use tax based on the vehicle's sale price or $35, whichever is greater. If you do not have proof of the price that you paid for the vehicle, the 3% will be assessed on the official NADA trade-in value. If the vehicle is less than 6 model years old, you may submit a notarized Affidavit for Procurement of Title (SUT 1A) attesting to the sale price.

NOTE: If you are exempt from the motor vehicle sales and use tax, as provided by statute 58.1-2403, bring proof of your exemption status or complete the Purchaser's Statement of Tax Exemption (SUT3) indicating the reason for exemption.

If you are titling the vehicle in Virginia for the first time and you hold a valid assignable title or registration issued in your name by another state, you will not have to pay the sales and use tax. However, if you purchased the vehicle within the preceding 12 months, you must provide proof that the sales and use tax was paid elsewhere in order to be exempt from sales and use tax in Virginia.

If I am reading this correctly, and I hope I am, if I ask the dealer to title in VA, then he won't charge me the Ohio tax of 6.75%, and when I register in VA, I will only have to pay 3%. Does that seem right? I sure hope so. If it is, I will save over $700.00 in taxes.

Hey BKK, are there any changes for the 3 for 2007? Haven't seen or read anything about the 07's, except for a couple of option changes. Did you get the sedan or hatch?

Go through the stickies at the top of this section for the '07 Mazda3 changes - it's been refreshed. I actually saw my first on the road '07 today and dealers here in Torolnto have a decent amount of stock already.

I am not sure exactly where I will be living. I will be working in the Lorton area just off I-95 around the Occoquan (sp). I would like to live somewhere where I can afford a house with a basement and a garage that is close to a golf course. That's not asking too much is it? A couple of the people I know who work there already live in West Virginia. That might be a bit far...

Mirt: I haven't seen anything on the web, besides what is in sticky, but the 5dr 3s pictured there is exactly what I am going to be getting. That color is called Aurora Blue in 2007 speak. Apparently the trim levels are the same, i.e. 3s, 3s Touring, and 3s Grand Touring. I think they did away with the blue and red inserts on the cloth seats, because the only interiors available are black or grey cloth and black leather. Other than that, and apparently a slight price increase, probably due to the sinking dollar and sinking ships, I can't address any other changes with any certainty. I have copies of the color palette and corresponding interior choices on my laptop. I am currently out of town, and using an internet cafe. Next time, I will try to post those.
